RIO RICO – The Douglas Bulldogs kicked off Gila Regional play Monday night falling to the Rio Rico Hawks 81-42.

Douglas got off to a poor start trailing 32-2 at the end of the first quarter.

“We could not recover,” Douglas’ basketball coach Abe Grijalva said. “It was a combination of them making their shots and us not converting ours.”

Rio Rico led 46-14 at the half.

In the second half the Bulldogs stepped it up offensively but were still outscored 35-30.

Adrian Valencia scored 12 points to lead the Bulldogs, Gabriel Valencia followed with nine and Jerry Altamirano contributed eight.

The Bulldogs, 1-6 overall, 0-1 in league play, are at the San Carlos Tournament Friday and Saturday.

In junior varsity action Monday the Bulldogs fell by the same score of 81-42.

Dorian Loreto led Douglas in scoring with 11 points; Arrin Acosta followed with nine.

“We had trouble with Rio Rico’s pressure, but we played hard,” Douglas’ coach John Mariscal said. “Dorian did a good job underneath, he had a lot of rebounds and defended well.”

The Douglas freshmen fell to Rio Rico’s freshmen 67-64.

Alan Maldonado led Douglas in scoring with 21 points; Jesse Arias followed with 15, Xavier Altamirano contributed 11.

“We were down by 13 at halftime, but we battled back to make it a close

Game,” Douglas’ freshmen coach Oscar Mariscal said. “It was our best game of the young season. I hope we can continue to improve.”
