Bulldogs go 1-2 at Benson tournament

BENSON – The Douglas Bulldogs posted a 1-2 record at the Benson Holiday Basketball tournament last weekend.


On Thursday the Bulldogs won their first game of the season defeating the Valley Union Blue Devils 43-38.

Douglas led 28-25 at the half and the game was tied 33-33 heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs outscored Valley Union 10-5 taking the five point win.

Spencer Grijalva led Douglas in scoring with 15 points, Adrian Valencia followed with 10 and Jerry Altamirano contributed eight.

On Friday the Bulldogs fell to Willcox 55-48.

The Bulldogs trailed 21-12 at the end of the first quarter and 36-21 at the half.

The Bulldogs outscored the Cowboys 25-23 in the second half the first half deficit was too much to overcome as the Bulldogs fell.

Gabriel Valencia scored 17 points to lead the Bulldogs in scoring Altamirano followed with 14.

On Saturday night the Bulldogs played Benson and lost 55-49.

Halftime score was 22-17 Benson. In the third quarter the Bulldogs outscored the Bobcats 21-13 taking a 38-35 lead.

Benson outscored the Bulldogs 20-11 in the fourth handing Douglas a six-point loss.

Grijalva scored 16 points to lead the Bulldogs in scoring, Gabriel Valencia also scored 16; Juan Mariscal closed out with seven.

In the tournament sophomore Abner Cortez competed in the free throw contest and won in the final round shooting 7 for 10 free throws to defeat the player from Willcox. The participants had 15 seconds to make 10 free throws.

Grijalva was select to the All-Tournament team as six players which included the Tournament MVP from St. Gregory were chosen by the coaches and tournament officials.
