After the reading, Natalio Sabal, told the students about the importance of reading books, newspapers, magazines, and anything they can get their hands on.
“When I first came here from Spain, I constantly had a dictionary by my side,” Sabal said. “I read it because I wanted to know the meaning of the big words.”
From Feb. 2 to the 12, the school is sponsoring a “Love Of Reading” program, in which community members such as Police Chief Alberto Melis and Judge Alma Vildosola, and many others, will read to the children, said José Frisby, the executive director of the Omega Alpha.
Second Grade teacher Virginia Enriquez organized the “Love of Reading” program at the school.
Frisby said they use the Structured Reading Assessment (SRA) program, which helps students not only find their reading level but also helps improve their reading skills.
“Many of the students are reading six months ahead of their level,” Frisby said.
The ability to read ahead of their level comes from the two-hour a day reading class that students attend, from 8:15 to 10:15 a.m.
There are 550 students at the school, with 300 of those belonging to grades Kindergarten though 5gth Grade. The remainder of these students are in middle school and high school at Omega Alpha
