A 3-year-old Willcox boy was found hanged Thursday morning from a rafter of a hay barn.

The boy was transported to Northern Cochise Community Hospital, where medics attempted to revive the boy. He was pronounced dead at 10:30 a.m., said Carol Capas, spokeswoman for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Department.

The boy’s name was not released because of his age.

Shortly before 9:30 a.m. Thursday the family of the boy was outside doing chores, Capas said.

When they were done, they looked for the boy and found him inside the hay barn, which is a lean-to type of structure with a pitched metal roof and exposed 2 by 4 rafters.

The 3-year-old boy was hanging from a rafter by a piece of cloth that the child often played with, Capas said.

The family brought him down, called 9-1-1, and the mother administered CPR until medics from Health Care Innovations arrived.

Sheriff’s deputies searched the area and found that the scene was consistent with the family’s story.

Sheriff deputies are ruling it accidental with no suspicious circumstances at this time, Capas said.

The investigation is continuing until the sheriff’s department receives the results from the Medical Examiners’ Office.
