A 13-year-old boy was sentenced to five years in juvenile corrections for the shooting death of his mother in August 2008.

“He will serve his sentence up until his 18th birthday,” said Doyle Johnstun, the Chief Criminal Deputy County Attorney in Cochise County.

Juan Carlos Madrid is being held in the Cochise County Juvenile Detention Center in Sierra Vista.  From there, he will be transferred to the Department of Juvenile Corrections, where he will serve his time until he is 18.

Because Madrid was charged as a juvenile, he will not serve any more time after he is 18, Johnstun said.

On August 1, at about 4:19 p.m., Madrid, 12-years-old at the time, shot and killed his mother, Sara Madrid, 34, with a small caliber handgun.

The boy and mother had an argument earlier in the day over his chores. The mother and her boyfriend, Alfonso Muñoz, left the home and returned later that afternoon.  The mother had just gotten out of the car when the boy shot her eight times. The handgun belonged to the mother’s boyfriend.

" I can't believe this murderer is only doing five years for the heinous crime he committed. He didn't just shoot the mother once or twice but a total of eight times. That says alot about this perp. I say you charge him as an adult and let his face the consequences of his horrible actions. "
