The final of three public forums on Douglas Unified School District attendance zones is set for Tuesday, February 17, with a final decision set to be made following the forum.

Two previous forums have drawn more than 200 people. That is the reason this special meeting will be held at the Douglas High School Auditorium beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The district administration is pushing for one of four options that would consolidate elementary classes into PreK-2 and 3-6 grades, moving all sixth grades to the elementary level and having only one middle school, Huber.

When the discussions started on the need to make changes back in September, four options were mentioned: No change; redistricting of the schools; moving to a preK-2, 3-6 grade format; and a Pre-K 6 format. With both of the latter suggestions, Ray Borane would no longer be a middle school.

One of the reasons for the change at the middle school level, according to School District  Superintendent Earl Pettit was the need for more highly qualified teachers at the middle school level, and moving the sixth grade back to the elementary level would take care of that problem.

" I think its pretty pathetic that they exclude Faras from all this. Faras kindergarden class is so large that the student teacher can't teach them the class is so out of control is it fair to the children and to the student teacher? Do you mr Pette even care? Are you going to provide the proper teachers to be able to have 2 of each class? Or are you just focusing on other schools? I have not been able to attend the meetings because I do work, but I feel this is getting out of control. I only hope you Mr. Pette do some changes at Faras like Get the proper amount of teachers for the classes having 32 student in one class with only a student teacher. These poor children are so lost but thank you Mr Petee for caring we have you to thank. Fondly Shelley "
