A Douglas man may be charged for using a beam of light to assault and endanger the life of a Border Patrol helicopter pilot.

At about 6:30 p.m. Jan. 18 the man walked out of his house 10 miles east of Douglas and aimed the beam of light at the helicopter hovering over a group of about 20 migrants, said Carol Capas, the spokeswoman for the Cochise County Sheriff’s Department.

The light shining at the helicopter momentarily blinded the pilot as he assisted the agents on the ground.

The man’s name was not released because he has not been formally charged by the Cochise County Attorney’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies contacted the man and he admitted he had aimed the light at the helicopter.

The charges against the man will be forwarded to the Cochise County Attorney’s Office, where they will be reviewed for possible charges of assault and endangerment, Capas said.

" It is obvious that the guy that made the Big Pickle statement has never flown in a helicopter, its not like driving your family car. I flew in the army and know even a bright light at night can be dangerous. Im sure that guys job at arbys is more dangerous. "

" There is no way a helicopter could be flying less then 50 feet. Thats exageration! they would collide with electrical wire, phone wire cable wire etc..... Why put the pilots life in danger? house rattles? might want to check your house there. Yeah good thinking there "yeah whatever", lets complain about "BP" doing their job and lets let the illegals get in your yard. COMMON SENSE PEOPLE "

" well yea i live in town too but i live near quail run and im close to the airport so it does get annoying when they fly by your house and they do fly really low sometimes too low. but still if you wanted to do something about it you could have filed a report and not take it in to your own hands. "

" First People in Douglas or surrounding border towns complain about the illegals running in their property or neighborhoods. Then BP Comes around and catches them and saves the day.. But then BP is trying to do their job and NO ONE wants the helicopter flying near by to catch them.... Make up your mind people... A helicopter is not importatant unless it's there to help you, then it's fine... If not then Its a bother... to yeah Whatever on top... Get a Life you cry Baby.... "

" You think this is a bunch of bull. However, If the pilot was wearing Night vision equiptment that little light could have caused a crash killing his neighbors or other you may care about.
Believe this the pilots do not fly low just to tick you off. they have a dangerous job to do and they do it well. While you are all safe and comfy in your homes men and women are risking their lives to protect you. Just so you can stay fat dumb and happy in your own home. FYI, 106 Border Patrol Agents have made that sacrifice. "

" When will have enough of these Homeland fools and send them packing out of here. If the government would develop a sensible imigration policy all this nosense could stop. The border area has come to look like a war zone with Americans rights being trampled. I fear our government more than a few illegals asking for some water. What a joke this country has become. "

" I, for one, am thankful to hear the helicopters of both BP and Lifeline. It means our homes are being protected and our lives are being saved. Blinding a pilot is extremely dangerous and puts several lives at risk, it should not be taken lightly. Whether the person is aggravated or not is no excuse to put others in danger. "

" To some degree I feel that this man that shot the light in the eyes of the pilot was aggrivated. I live in town and the helicopter for the border patrol has passed by my house on numerous occasions flying way too low. As a matter of fact i felt like either filing a complaint with the border patrol of the FAA< since it unnecessary for them to be flying so low. I am not on the outskirts of town by any means. They fly less than 50 feet off the ground I'd say, making my whole house rattle. So I'd say this guy finally got fed up with the "interruptions" and decided to do something about it. "
