Final meeting on attendance zones set for DHS tonight

Published/Last Modified on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 3:54 PM MST

The final of three public forums on Douglas Unified School District attendance zones is set for Tuesday, February 17, with a final decision set to be made following the forum.

Two previous forums have drawn more than 200 people. That is the reason this special meeting will be held at the Douglas High School Auditorium beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The district administration is pushing for one of four options that would consolidate elementary classes into PreK-2 and 3-6 grades, moving all sixth grades to the elementary level and having only one middle school, Huber.

When the discussions started on the need to make changes back in September, four options were mentioned: No change; redistricting of the schools; moving to a preK-2, 3-6 grade format; and a Pre-K 6 format. With both of the latter suggestions, Ray Borane would no longer be a middle school.

One of the reasons for the change at the middle school level, according to School District  Superintendent Earl Pettit was the need for more highly qualified teachers at the middle school level, and moving the sixth grade back to the elementary level would take care of that problem.

Following  is the proposed school attendance zones:

" Instead of bashing the current board members, why isn't anyone upset at the 2 former board members that asked for our support when running for school board then chose not to attend December's special board meeting? Have you all forgotten that in December there was a meeting scheduled to discuss the continuance of Pettit's responsibilities as superintendent? As 'are you kidding me' wrote, Pettit knows he is on the chopping block. He has known that for a while now. If you had any interest at all in your local school district, you would know Pettit has been nothing but a huge problem since he was hired. Two members who were supposed to represent our children apparently were intimidated by Pettit; that's rather dumb since Pettit answers to the board. Mr. Estrada and Mr. Ortega chose not to attend their last meeting as board members rather than address the Pettit problem. It is sad to see the community has allowed themselves to be pitted against each other because of Pettit. To those of you who have chosen to support him, be careful what bridges you burn. Those you have decided to be against right now may be the ones you someday need help from. "

" Ever since Pettit began working on the rezoning/reconfiguration project, he said that if his model was not accepted, the middle schools would be taken over by the state and teachers would lose their jobs and have to reapply for them with the state. As those of you in attendance at the forum on Tuesday heard, that is not true. Earl Pettit said the middle schools will not be taken over next year. The man blatantly lied. The middle schools are underperforming; that issue needs to be corrected. The threat Pettit made was just a scare tactic to get people to support him. Bottom line is that we as a community, not only parents, need to work together with DUSD to find viable solutions to the problems at hand. Earl Pettit publicly stated he would not be working on the issues again if his recommendation was not accepted. With that being said, of what use is he for DUSD? Can he be trusted? I would say not. I applaud those who stood up to him and asked him to provide more information regarding his plan. He did not like that; apparently he does not like being questioned so he embarked on a smear campaign of deliberately bad-mouthing Stevenson and all associated with it. He indirectly made threats. DUSD is comprised of many schools and from the looks of it not one school was completely in agreement with his plan. Pettit, you are a poor example to our youth. It is time you move on. "

" If you were up to speed on what is really going on in the district you would know that Huber has failed to meet its annual yearly progress AGAIN and is in the position to be taken over and RUN by the state. All of the teachers will have to reapply for the jobs that they currently hold--whether they've been there for 1 year or 30 years.

Our district has lost a significatn amount of funding---funding for SALARIES. If you really believe that nobody will be laid off I have some magic beans to sell you!

Mr. Petit is talking out both sides of his face. He knows that he's on the chopping block and is trying to drum up support for his lost cause-he needs to be honest and up front with the people of Douglas---our children's future is at stake here. "

" What was said was no one is being layed off..... IF THE RESTRUCTURING PLAN IS ADOPTED! Now that the board has placed the district in the position of being controlled by the state and in financial shortfall by not adopting the proposal, all bets are off. Lets look to be like Sierra Vista and cut jobs or Bisbee and close a school.... disgusted from the whole fiasco. "

" With the state cuts Douglas will lose at least $3-5 million dollars next year. Does anyone think that they have that just sitting around. Mesa just notified 600 staff members they would not be renewed for next year. Tucson is still working on their number. It's everywhere! The cuts will land between 10 and 15% of the budget. Do the math! There will be layoffs, non-renewals, not rehired, call it what you want. "

" I don't understand why Mr. D says Huber teachers won't be rehired. Last night at the meeting Mr. Petitt said no one was getting layed off. That if some thirty teachers leave or retire he won't hire thirty he would hire 25. No One is getting let go per Supt. words. "

" Just watched the rezoning get shut down by our disfunct school board. Now the teachers at Huber have to get the bad news of being told that a few of them won't be rehired. I am pretty sure that summer school is out of the question. I just don't want to hear people complaining about the upcoming financial decisions that will be affecting our school district. I can't believe how backwards our people here in Douglas are. Again stay tuned to our difficult upcoming sequence of events. "
