Phone scam targets grandparents wanting to help relatives

As a result of numerous calls received by the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Larry Dever wants to caution residents of a telephone scam aimed at older adults.

The scam has been for a resident to receive a phone call fro someone identifying themselves as a grandchild who is in trouble in Canada.

The purported “child” is then requesting money to be wired to them using a predetermined location, either a post office or outlet store that can receive wire transfers. The caller is providing information on who to pay the money to, not directly to the “child” calling.

The resident usually has not heard from their grandchildren for an extended period and the called talks in an excited voice pressing the issue.

Sheriff Dever encourages anyone receiving a call of this nature not to send money as requested before confirming with multiple family members that the need exists. Please use caution and keep your money safe.
