On January 19, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office received a call in reference to a skunk that had been in a fight with a dog in Saint David and that skunk tested positive for rabies. On January 27, the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office received two additional calls regarding skunks fighting with dogs, also in the Saint David area. Both skunks also tested positive for rabies.

In the past two weeks there have been three more recovered skunks that tested positive for rabies in the Saint David/Benson area.

There are several more vaccination clinics scheduled within the next few weeks as follows:

ARK Mobile Veterinary Clinic will be at the Tombstone Small Animal Shelter on February 25, call 457—2545 for an appointment. They will also be at 4001 E. Foothills Drive in Sierra Vista on February 26 and 27 and vaccinations for dogs and cats are $15.00. Call (520) 730-3001 for an appointment.

Cochise County Health Department officials along with the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office Animal Control division is urging all pet owners to have their animals vaccinated against the rabies virus. Remember that the initial vaccination is only good for one year, while each subsequent vaccination is good for three  years.
