Edward “Walo” Pinedo passed away in San Diego, California on Jan 12, 2009 at the age of 70.  He was born in Douglas, Arizona, but lived in San Diego for over 50 years.  He attended Douglas High and then joined the Navy.  His favorite football team was the San Diego Chargers.

Vivienne Ruth Mikkelson
February 6, 1925 - January 10, 2009

Vivienne Ruth Mikkelson, 83, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2009 in her home in Tucson,  AZ.  She is survived by her sons  Darrel (Diane) Hale of Tolleson, AZ, William (Janet) Byrd of Flagstaff, AZ, Christian Mikkelson of Tucson, AZ, stepson Mark (Laura) Mikkelson of Phoenix, AZ., stepdaughters Jill (Chris) Jarman of Tempe, AZ., and Trudi Mikkelson of Phoenix, AZ.  She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Also her companion dog Kuji. Vivienne is preceded in death by her husband Dr. Clayton Mikkelson, DVM and stepson Mikkel Mikkelson.

Luis “Louie” Perez

Luis “Louie” Perez was born April 1, 1960 in Douglas and passed away suddenly on February 3, 2009 at his home. He is preceded in death by his father Luis Perez and sister Rachel Maldonado. Surviving are his mother Anastacia Perez and daughters Roxanne Alday and Aislin Perez. Surviving also are his brother Henry (Anna) Vargas, Frank (Anita) Perez, John Perez, sisters Mary Lou Bracamonte, Stella Garcia, Yolanda (Gilbert) Altamirano, and Toni (Martin) Valencia. He also leaves behind 5 grandchildren. Louie lived a very simple life. Louie was a Dallas Cowboys fan and Los Angeles Lakers fan as well, was a chef and cook. Louie will be greatly missed. Rosary will be Thursday, February 5, 2009-7:00 p.m. in the main chapel of Adair Douglas Funeral Chapel, 1860-8th St. Mass of the Resurrection will be Friday, February 6, 2009-10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church with father James Baka. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Kenneth George Friskey, “Pop,” passed away peacefully Friday morning, January 23, 2009.   Ken was born August 9, 1918, to Charles and Ida Friskey, in Calumet, MI, a small copper mining town (the link to Douglas) on the tip of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.  He grew up during the Great Depression and spent his youth in the woods and in Lake Superior’s icy waters.

Emma Englehart Freaner

Longtime resident of Douglas, AZ,  Emma Englehart Freaner passed away on February 13, 2009. She was born on November 10, 1915 in Douglas. She is survived by her daughters Edna Hammond, Gilda Vincent and Nadia Villalobos. She leaves behind nine grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  Surviving Emma are  a brother and four sisters. A longtime resident of Douglas, Concepcion Valdez Bracamonte passed away in Tucson January 29, 2009.  She was born on November 11, 1921 in Chihuahua, Mexico.  She is preceded in death by her husband, Manuel O. Bracamonte, and Son, Luis J. Bracamonte.  She is survived by two Daughters, Esther Campana-Lopez  and JoAn Lucas; six Sons, Manuel Patricio, Jose Antonio, Efren, Enrique, Francisco, & Raymond, and two Sisters, Eva Gutierrez and Olga Alvarado.   She also leaves behind 25 Grandchildren and 18 Great-Grandchildren.   Rosary will be recited on Sunday, February 1, at Adair Funeral Home at 7:00 p.m; and a Mass will be held on Monday, February 2, 2009, at Immaculate Conception Church.  Serving as Pallbearers for Mrs. Bracamonte are her six Sons Manuel, Jose Antonio, Efren, Enrique, Francisco, & Raymond.

September 5, 1917 - January 28, 2009

Nestor R. Corella passed away January 28, 2009 in Tucson, AZ. Nestor was born on September 5, 1917 in Agua Prieta, Sonora to Jesus and Maria Corella. Surviving is his wife Blanca of 43 years of marriage.  Surviving also are his daughters Patricia (Gus) Brown, Christina (Armando) Valdez, Rachel Corella, Sarah Corella, Rafaelita Corella,  and sons Nestor Corella, Abelardo Corella, Fernando Corella, Luis Corella, and Jose Corella. Also surviving are his brothers Manuel Jesus Corella, David Corella, Oscar Corella, and sister Rosa Moreno Corella. Nestor leaves behind 20 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was a retired mill operator from Phelps Dodge Corporation. After his retirement Nestor served in the Lions Club, Los Viejos Amigos, was involved in community and church service, enjoyed playing the guitar, and was avid public speaker. Viewing will be Monday, February 2, 2009-4-6 p.m. at Adair Douglas Funeral Chapel. Rosary will be Monday, February 2, 2009-7:00 p.m. in the main chapel of Adair Douglas Funeral Chapel. Mass of the Resurrection will be, Tuesday, February 3, 2009-10:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Church. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Yolanda Estrada Alvarado

Yolanda Estrada Alvarado 56, a resident of Silver City, NM entered eternal rest on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Gila Regional Medical Center.  She was born March 13, 1952 to Gilberto and Aida (Ramirez) Estrada at Douglas, AZ.  She enjoyed sewing, playing bunko and going to casinos.  Her pride and joy were her grandkids.  They were her world and made her feel full of life when they would look at her with their beautiful smile.  She was looking forward to her two grandkids that were on the way.  She was grateful for her brothers and sisters and looked forward for her nightly prayer with her sister, Estella and her morning calls with her brother Rene.  Mrs. Alvarado loved to go visit her mother in Douglas, AZ.  Anyone that knew her knew that her family was her life and understood what it meant to be loved unconditionally.  She looked forward to her morning coffee with her special friend, Mary Bencomo.  She is survived by her loving husband, Steve Z. Alvarado of the family home; mother, Aida (Ramirez) Saavedra of Douglas, AZ; one son, Steven and wife Evelyn Alvarado of Silver City; three daughters, Pattie Montes and husband EJ of Mesa, AZ; Marisa Castrillo and husband Albert of Silver City; Corina  Barragan and husband Jack also of Silver City; three brothers, Frank Estrada and wife Frances of Globe, AZ; Gilbert Estrada and wife Celina of Tucson, AZ; Rene Estrada and wife Bertha of Tucson, AZ; five sisters, Estella Morales and husband David of Tucson, AZ; Letty Medrano and husband Nico of Douglas; Terry Llanes and husband George of Douglas; Lilly Gibbons and husband Dirk of Tucson and Lucy Verovich of Tucson; six grandkids, Matt, Daniel, Ethan, Grace, Avery and Isabelle; best friend, Mary Bencomo; special friends, Elsa Thompson, Rosario Montes and Bunko girls.  She is preceded in death by her father, Gilberto Estrada; paternal grandparents, Jose and Catalina Estrada; maternal grandparents, Armando and Maria Jesus Ramirez; one grandchild, Andres Montes.   Prayer vigil and Holy rosary will take place Friday, February 13th at 7:30pm at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Douglas, AZ with Deacon Tom Willis reciting.  The funeral mass will take place Saturday, February 14th at 10:30am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Father Gilbert Malu officiating.  Pallbearers will be Rene, Gilbert Sr. and Frank Estrada, Albert Castrillo, Jack Barragan and David Morales Jr.  Honorary pallbearers will be David Morales Sr. Dirk Gibbons, George Llanes Sr., Jesse Montes Jr., Jesse Montes Sr., Sam Bencomo, Frank Owen, Armando Alvarado, Gilbert Estrada Jr. and Rene Fimbres.  In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made to GRMC Cancer Center 1313 E. 32nd St. Silver City, NM. 88061.  Cremation will take place at Terrazas Crematory.  Arrangements are with Terrazas Funeral Chapels and Terrazas Crematory “Trusted care for the ones you love” ~ (575)537-0777.  To send condolences, visit www.terrazasfuneralchapel.com.

Hector Manuel Martinez

Hector Manuel Martinez passed away on February 7, 2009. He was born on June 28, 1983 in Douglas, AZ. He is preceded in death by his grandfathers Pedro G. Pinedo and Francisco Luis Martinez. Surviving is his wife Mariela Peralta of 5 years, his children Hector Andres Martinez, Kianna Lexani Martinez, father Manuel Arturo Martinez, mother Celia Soto Martinez, and grandparents Maria Elena Pinedo and Socorro Villa. He leaves behind his brothers Julio Cesar Lomeli, Manuel Arturo Martinez Jr., sisters Elva M. Cazares, Sofia Ariana Martinez as well as numerous aunts and uncles. Hector was a loving and devoted father, husband, son and friend. Hector was employed by Vision Quest as an Administrative officer, worked at Douglas High school as a security officer and then most recently as a Corrections Officer for the Arizona Department of Corrections. He loved baseball and basketball, and football. In 2001 he was a member of the Douglas High school state baseball champions. He could always find a reason to have a cookout. Hector we love you and will dearly miss you for ever in our hearts.

Maria Luisa de la Vara

Maria Luisa de la Vara, 67, of Peoria, Arizona passed away on January 24th, 2009. She is survived by her two sons, Guillermo “Ricky” (Mary) and Steven (Kim) de la Vara, her five grandchildren; Joelle (Michael) Huston and Jessica, Jocelyn, Joshua and Alyssa de la Vara, her sister, Nellie Hernandez, and her two brothers Robert and John Rodriguez. She was born on July 23, 1941 in Douglas, Arizona. After her eldest son, “Ricky” was born, she moved to Phoenix in 1968 where she attended Phoenix College to study interior design. She worked for the Motorola Company until she started as a housekeeper at Marriott’s Mountain Shadows Resort in 1982. A tremendously hard worker, she worked her way to become Housekeeping Manager at Marriott’s Residence Inn and eventually to head the Payroll department at Marriott’s Camelback Inn from 1992 on. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Herlinda and Clemente Rodriguez and her brother-in-law, Jose Hernandez, Jr. Maria always put her family and friends first and did so much for everyone in her life. Her impact in our lives will be forever missed and never forgotten. In the words of her only grandson, Joshua, “She is doing God’s payroll now.” There will be a Visitation at 5 PM followed by a Rosary at 7 PM on Wednesday, January 28th 2009. A Memorial Mass will take place on Thursday, January 29th at 10:30 AM. Luncheon immediately following. All services will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church; 6180 W. Utopia Rd, Glendale, AZ 85308. To honor Maria’s wishes, in lieu of flowers, memorial gifts will be accepted specifically for the education of her 5 grandchildren. Memorial donation boxes will be available at the Rosary and the Mass. All checks may be made payable to her son, Steve de la Vara.
