MESA — Cochise College fell out of a tie for first place in the Arizona Community College Athletic standings with an 88-80 loss at Mesa Community College.

That loss coupled with Arizona Western’s 83-35 win in Yuma sent the Matadors to a one-game lead over the Apaches with three regular season games to go. Cochise hosts Central Arizona College Saturday, needing a win to set up an all-important rematch with Arizona Western in Douglas on Saturday.

On Wednesday night, the Apaches fell behind by 20 early and trailed by 13 at the half.

Behind the aggressive play of Marcus Williams, who finished with a team-high 24 points, the Apaches rallied to take a 78-75 lead with three minutes left, but the Thunderbirds scored on seven of their last eight trips to pull out the eight-point win.

“Mesa’s a good team, they play good defense and they’re well coached,” Carrillo said. “They got out on us early and I thought our guys fought back really well. We just couldn’t close it out.”

Jamiko Verner and Victor Reid, the conference’s player of the week, had 14 points apiece and DeAngelo Jones, the ACCAC’s leading scorer, had 11. Leading 3-point shooter Mike Mayo went just 1-for-11 behind the arc.

Arizona Western is at Mesa on Saturday, visits Cochise on Tuesday and closes at home with Eastern Arizona College on Feb. 27, the same night Cochise closes the regular season at Phoenix College.
