A midafternoon fire on Thursday kept onlookers busy .

Traffic came to a standstill on Pan American as drivers craned their necks to look at a fire west of the Douglas Police Department.

The City of Douglas  Fire Department received the call for the fire at approximately. 3:15 p.m.  First arriving units did find a fully involved structure fire where the flame had breached the roof.

A supply line from the hydrant on was established which was approximately. 1300 feet from the fire. High winds were a factor.

Emergency crews also had to contend with live downed power lines near the structure and the fire also caused nearby large brush to also contact flame and move the fire in an easterly direction toward town.

Efforts to dowse the brush fire were successful, and the fire in the building was extinguished. Minimal fire “load” contents in the structure did help in the extinguishment.  Sunnyside and Pirtleville Fire Departments were called in for assistance.

After the fire knockdown, the scene was turned over to Sunnyside and Pirtleville Fire Departments for the extinguishment of “hot spots” and overhaul.

This building is considered to be in the “County Area” and that is why it was turned over to our County Fire Departments.

" I know I was just a looky-loo, but I am curious why they used that hydrant which ran through neighborhood streets and past the skate park. There was one where I was watching from by 11th street which was much closer than 1300 feet and didn't go through areas that were streets and populated. It just seemed like the first trucks on scene weren't thinking too clearly for their first attack. That building was just waiting to be burned up, now who gets to tear it down? Who owns it? "
