BISBEE — A teenager arrested on arson and drug charges is scheduled to appear in Cochise County Superior Court for two suppression hearings in the coming weeks.

Manuel Corona, now 17, is charged with a total of 12 counts as a result of destructive acts at Valley Union High School in Elfrida and possession of drugs and paraphernalia during a vehicle stop along Highway 80 in Tombstone.

On July 22 or 23, he allegedly committed arson of a school administrative building, committed burglary of the administrative building while armed, committed burglary of the school’s science lab, and committed aggravated criminal damage of the administrative building, the lab and the gym.

On June 26, he allegedly possessed more than nine grams of cocaine, possessed the drug for sale and transported the drug for sale. He also allegedly possessed drug paraphernalia, including two bag packages and a small electronic scale.

Corona appeared in Division 3 court on Monday and Judge Wallace Hoggatt set hearing dates for both cases.

For the drug case, he will hear arguments on three motions on March 6, including a motion to suppress statements made and evidence seized, a motion to dismiss for lack of reasonable suspicion/invalid search, and a motion to preclude character evidence.

Arguments for two other motions concerning that case will be heard at a later date, including a motion to preclude drug courier/dealer/user profile evidence and a motion to dismiss on the basis of multiplicitous charges.

Regarding the arson case, Hoggatt will hear arguments on March 12 regarding a motion to suppress statements made by Corona.

Deputy County Attorneys Marc Offenhartz and Roger Contreras are prosecuting the arson case and drug case, respectively. Defense attorney Ricardo Bracamonte is representing Corona.

A pretrial hearing for both cases also will be held on March 12. The arson case and drug case are scheduled for jury trials on April 13 and May 12, respectively.
