Hector McGrew was stabbed in what he said was a mistaken identity as part of a gang incident on Friday evening.

McGrew, 23, had been stabbed in the stomach, just bellow the ribcage, and had a large welt under his right eye.

The incident started when Douglas Police were called to the 1500 block of B Avenue in reference to a fight. It was the second such call it had to the area in 30 minutes.

Upon arrival, the officers saw a grey Oldsmobile Alero leaving the area.

The officers conducted a felony stop at the corner of 15th Street and B Avenue. The officers stopped the vehicle with guns drawn, and shouted verbal commands to the vehicle’s occupants.

McGrew, wearing a light blue shirt and blue jeans exited the vehicle through the rear door on the driver’s side and then began to run south along B Avenue.

Officers caught up to him when he fell as he was about to run up the alleyway between 15th and 16th streets.

He was told to stay on the ground, but McGrew attempted to get up and run again and began to fight with officers.

Once McGrew was handcuffed was when police discovered his injuries. McGrew’s left side of the shirt was drenched in blood as were his pants down past the pockets.

Police immediately contacted emergency services and McGrew was transported by Douglas Fire Department ambulance to Southeast Arizona Medical Center.

Police returned to the vehicle and began interviewing driver, Fernando Guillen, 29.

According to Guillen, McGrew called him at about 9:40 p.m. and told him he had been stabbed at Robert Botello’s house, 1507 B Avenue. Guillen also said that McGrew told him that the police were on the scene. When he went to see if McGrew was alright, Guillen was suddenly hit in the head with a pole. According to Guillen, he was able to fight the subjects off and take the pole away from them. McGrew and Guillen were leaving the house when police arrived the second time.

At the hospital, McGrew at first didn’t have anything to say about the incident, but later said he did not know who stabbed him or why. He said he was at Botello’s house working on a car, and the next thing he knew he was being chased by the police.

At one point, McGrew said it was all gang-related and that he was mistaken for someone else.

He did not comment on who stabbed him or who was supposed to be stabbed.

No charges have yet to be filed since McGrew refused to cooperate, according to the police report.

" I PERSONALY LIVE ON THAT SIDE OF TOWN AND I DON'T THINK IT'S A BAD SIDE OF TOWN I'M TALKING ABOUT THE AREA DOWN BY 20TH STREET AND A AVE ON UP. I AM NEIGHBORS WITH MCGREW HE IS A GOOD KID ALONG WITH HE'S FAMILY. PEOPLE JUST JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER, WHICH ISN'T ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA.... THE AREA THAT SHOULD BE FOCOUSED ON IS THE BORDER WHERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ILLEGAL ACTIVITIES OCCUR ALL THE TIME ON A DAILY BASIS, NOT JUST ONCE EVERY 6 YRS OR SO ON. DON'T GET ME MISUNDERSTOOD IT'S JUST THE FACT THAT WE ARE ALL EQUAL IN SOCIETY. I ALSO HAVE CHILDREN AND JUST BECAUSE WE ALL ARE RAISED DIFFERENTLY AND STRUGGLE FOR WHAT WE NEED IN LIFE DOESN'T JUSTIFY YOU AS A BAD PERSON. WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE?....... "

    " Dear Chief of Police,
Have you ever heard of Community Policing? It does work as I have seen it personally work in some of the worst gang infested areas of larger cities. You have good officers but give them the tools and give the citizens the service and the safety you were charged to provide. Dedicate the resources that are needed. We need a CRASH unit, this stands for Citiznes Response against street hodulums, these are officers who job is to identify and keep in check all gang bangers. Get with the times. "

I think the Douglas police department needs to get THIER act together before these gangs are seriously out of control! ITS A SHAME THAT WE NEED HOMELAND SECURITY IN OUR OWN TOWN!! "

" It is unbelievable that no charges have been filed. Suspects fled a scene, Hector McGrew ran away from police repeatedly, and is uncooperative. What else do police need to get scum like this off the streets and into JAIL? Its incredible that time after time the same group of people in Douglas commit crimes and are still free. And in reference to the comment by "old dawg" below, seriously? Instead of condoning behavior such as this, become a productive member of society! "

It is time the judge(s) act with the welfare of the people in Douglas in mind and hand these people the punishment they deserve. "

Thanks. "

since they have nothing else to do it leads them to trouble. douglas needs to make things for our youth, or douglas is going to become a place where people are scared to be around, "

" So much for the work of the gang unit. We're not even talking young kids, these are adults. Get them off the street! Some one who is totally innocent will be hurt and then we may see some action by our lazy Police Department. Instead of being proactive the police just wait around and cruise. This Police Chief is worthless! "
