County under red flag warning due to windy condition, fire danger

SIERRA VISTA — Cochise County, like must of Southern Arizona, is again under a red flag warning and a wind advisory on Friday.

The red flag warning goes into effect at noon and is scheduled to last until 7 p.m. The warning means that strong and gust winds and low relative humidities are in effect, raising the fire danger.

The National Weather Service said sustained winds of 20 to 30 mph are likely on Friday, with gusts of up to 50 mph possible.

Areas of blowing dust are also possible, which could make driving difficult, according to the weather service.

Windy conditions are forecast for Saturday, too.

Strong winds and low visibility have forced the closure of a 41-mile stretch of Interstate 40 in northern Arizona, according to The Associated Press.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says it was asked by state transportation officials to help close the interstate between Winona, which is just east of Flagstaff, and Winslow.
