When Maddux & Sons, Inc. is mentioned in conversation, just about everyone in Douglas knows exactly what you are talking about. The company is a landmark in its own right. As well known as "D" hill or the Gadsden Hotel. The company has evolved to meet the needs of the area for decades and shows no signs of slowing down.

The company was instrumental in many major construction projects throughout the city and county. For a long time Maddux & Sons sold only Redi-Mix Concrete, multi-colored rock for decorative landscaping, gravel mix and ABC (a top covering for dirt roads). Later, they added a variety of other materials to their selection. Now customers can purchase topsoil, river rock, mortar sand, concrete sand and bedding sand. Customers can also purchase decorative rock in a variety of colors and sizes, depending on their need.
Most of the materials are already located on site, however some rock is custom ordered because it has to be trucked in from elsewhere. Customers find that buying their decorative rock and topsoil is cheaper this way. They get more in a ton purchase than they would by buying the materials in bags from a retailer.
Concrete, soil, & rock aren’t the only thing Maddux & Sons offer. They offer a heavy duty equipment rental service. They also have a ROC. License, an excavating contractors license.
Maddux & Sons have honed their operations where deliveries are made efficiently and smoothly. For many years the plant and the main office were at two separate locations. Now the office, the plant, maintenance and tire shop is at one location. Ready-mix concrete is delivered first thing in the morning because they get more orders for Ready-Mix than any other material. Ready-Mix is time consuming and has to be delivered early in the morning. Once a driver has completed his Ready-Mix deliveries, he is free to deliver aggregate orders (anything other than Ready-Mix). Often this varies delivery time throughout the day, but deliveries are still made efficiently and within a reasonable time.
Some years ago the company almost folded due to slow business and price undercuts made by their competition. Their competitors were able to offer a lower price by selling an inferior product. They were skipping the important step of washing their material so they could offer lower prices. Maddux & Sons wash all their material because it makes for a better grade of material. Thanks to their commitment to sell a superior quality of material and to excellent customer service, Maddux & Sons persevered and won out over their competitors. "Good customer service is important. We do the best we can," says Toni Vance, office manager.
Maddux & Sons experience very little employee turn around. Many employees have been with the company for years and have even worked under more than one generation of Maddux's. As a result, the company has become one big extended family.
Reaching out to the community is also important to the company. Their support for various causes is unparalleled. As a result, Maddux & Sons have been presented with numerous awards and certificates throughout the years. The Douglas Chamber of Commerce presented Maddux & Sons with the Business of the Year award on January 22, 1994. Maddux & Sons even helped fight the Aspen Fire in the Catalina Mountains this past summer by providing desperately needed water trucks.
The City of Douglas, various businesses and several government agencies throughout the county have purchased materials from Maddux & Sons. They have filled orders in the past for the Naco Border Patrol station and the new Border Patrol station on Kings Hwy. They have been recently filling orders for the Douglas Unified School District.
Maddux & Sons has weathered adversity and become a stronger company because of it. They refused to sell inferior product and service in order to increase profit. Instead, they stuck to the high road by offering quality product and high standards.
