DOUGLAS, Arizona —U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers stopped a drug-smuggling attempt when they seized 2 dope filled purses from 2 nicely dressed ladies traveling with grandchildren.

Two women with grandchildren were caught at the Douglas Port of Entry while they tried to smuggle more than 10 pounds of marijuana in their purses.

On March 14, 2009 at about 6:30 p.m., CBP Officers selected a vehicle being driven by a 43 year-old Douglas, Arizona woman occupied by her 2 grandchildren and a 35 year-old woman from Tucson,  Arizona. The 2 women were nicely dressed and driving a late model Chevy Suburban. The vehicle was selected for a routine inspection when the CBP Officers became suspicious of the purses that belonged to the 2 women.   An inspection of the purses revealed that the 2 purses were full of marijuana. The combined weight of marijuana was more than 10 pounds with a street value of more than $16000.

“There are many reasons that a vehicle may be selected for a thorough inspection”, said Michael Humphries, Port Director at the Douglas Port Of Entry“ but as the CBP Officers search with diligence, and sensitivity to detail, regardless of the reason, the outcome is the same; if there is anything wrong they are going to find it.  It is this commitment to duty that strengthens our borders”.

CBP Officers seized the vehicle and marijuana. The grand children were immediately released to local family members. The 2 women were turned over to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation.
