Cruz named a national scholar
Douglas High School Senior Francisco J. Cruz has been selected for membership in the National Society of High School Scholars (NSHSS).
The society recognizes top scholars and invites only those students who have achieved superior academic excellence. The announcement was made by NSHSS Founder and Chairman Claes Nobel, a senior member of the family that established the Nobel Prizes.
Born in Douglas, Cruz left for a short time before returning to begin fifth grade. Cruz has a perfect 4.0 grade point average, has been involved in the Starfish Club, DECA and has played soccer all four years and was a member of this year’s state champion.
Cruz has already been accepted to the University of Arizona and has received a full tuition scholarship. He will be pursuing a degree in computer engineering.
“Ever since I was 10 years old, I have been fascinated with computers, played with them, fixed them. It has become a passion.”
Cruz is the son of Yolanda and Francisco Cruz and he has a 10-year-old sister, Nahomi, and a 17-year-old step-sister, Andrea.
