DPD has busy Saturday

Douglas Police Department officers had their hands full Saturday afternoon investigating two separate accidents that occurred within less than an hour of each other.

The first occurred shortly before 5 p.m. in the vicinity of International and E Ave.; the second took place at 5:50 p.m. in the 2600 block of 8th Street.

According to Officer Ted Kulkens of the Douglas Police Dept. an unidentified Border Patrol agent was heading south of E Ave when he spotted two illegal aliens coming out of the ditch onto International Ave.

The agent cut across a patch of dirt which caused his vehicle to lose traction. The vehicle crashed into the orange barriers along side of the ditch.

Kulkens said the vehicle actually stopped before going into the ditch but the momentum of the accident sent the vehicle over the embankment. The agent was not hurt in the accident and the illegal aliens managed to get back into Mexico.

A large caterpillar backhoe was brought in to remove the vehicle from the international ditch.

As Kulkens and several of his fellow officers were investigating that wreck a call came in about a two vehicle accident at the corner of 8th Street and Jackson Ave.

A 1980 Ford driven by Miguel Coronado Avitia of Douglas collided with a 2005 Kawasaki X63 driven by Milciades Amparo Jr. of Douglas.

According to Kulkens the Ford had been heading east on 8th Street and was on the verge of turning left onto Jackson Ave. when the Kawasaki came up on the left side and attempted to pass not only the Ford but also another vehicle following the Ford.

Kulkens said the Ford clipped the tail end of the motorcycle sending it crashing through a brick wall of a home located at 2600 8th St.

Amparo was injured enough the local Lifeline helicopter was called in landing right in the middle of 8th Street. He was later transported to University Medical Center Tucson with multiple injures.

Avitia was not injured in the wreck.

Kulkens says no citations have yet been issued in either wreck and the investigation into both accidents is continuing.
