Less than two months after being named the new head football coach at Douglas High School Trevor Highfield unexpectedly resigned late Monday due to “extenuating circumstances”.

Douglas’ Athletic Director Randy Walker said Tuesday the head coaching position is once again open and basically “we start all over.”

Walker refused to say this was a step back for the program and added everything happens for a reason.

“If we can find us a coach by mid-May we should be in good shape,” he said. “It’s unfortunate this happened but we have to move on. … Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be.”

Attempts to reach Highfield were unsuccessful. Look for updates throughout the week on our website at www.douglasdispatch.com.

You guys are all pathetic! You know what’s wrong with Douglas Athletics? Everybody thinks they know more then the next person and they insist on fighting and arguing about it rather than prove it through plan and action. I don’t even have to go far to prove my point, just scroll down and read your guy’s entire conversation... "

" Did anyone ever stop and think that the people everyone is mentioning have not even applied to be the head coach? "You got my vote" as stated in many articles but have they applied? I bet not as they see that today's athlete wants it all handed to them on a silver platter. There are a few that understand what committement, desire, attitude, hardwork and above all else TEAM means. Most of them do not know or care about team above me. Dedication and hardwork is missing today amongst the younger generation. Sorry people we have all of us to blame. And as far as winning at the pop warner level or even at the 9th and JV level... it is way different then varsity. If you know anything about football you should know that.

" Before you start recommending people to be the head coach, you need to understand the law. A head coach must be hold a teaching certificate. So, it doesn't make sense to throw people's names out if they are not qualified by the state. Back when Mike Foster was a coach, he surveyed kids from DHS. They overwhelmingly stated they had better things to do than play football. Look at our students. Some are dedicated, but many do not want to put the time into doing their part. The same kids play several sports. If you know a way to get more players, do it instead of blaming the few coaches who care enough to apply. You can't motivate someone who doesn't want to be there! Having him as a coach would bring a new since of hunger to these kids. Yeah he was the Pop Warner head coach and what results did it produce a winning program. Lets keep Ellsworth on as an offensive coach but lets bring in some new blood. I vote for Bobby. "

Good leadership?? When? On the way to buy snow cones for the kids? Did he have juicy juice breaks for them talk about how to run like the wind? We don't need someone with babysitting experience!

He truly deserves this position. But then again he has to make the final decision. And all these people saying bring in a pop warner coach to coach varsity football at the high school level is just like saying bring in a little league coach to run the varsity baseball game. The varsity level is a real challenge and it takes preparation. BRING IN COACH ELLSWORTH...and let Mr Tadeo run the offense. And i must agree the only time the bulldogs have been to the playoffs most recently, was when Coach Keith was on their staff...NEED I SAY MORE "

When I played football there were over 60 kids that tried out every year, and several had to be cut that was just the way things were. Now DHS is lucky if 20 kids try-out. I all of my high school years I learned and admired my coaches, they were tough, hard and sometimes in your face, but that how you learned, and that how we played 100% hard and tough! THe kids today don't understand that! everything is to soft for them now, you can't yell at them, there is no motivating them, give them a video game and they're set for life...sad but true! "

The answers to these questions could give a great deal of information how much the administration cares about the state of the program. Good luck to the kids, and hopefully they find someone that will shape the program together. "

" As a former football player for D.H.S. I had the great pleasure of playing for Coach Ellsworth and I agree he would once again make a terrific head football coach. When I played however he was not the head coach he was our defensive coordinator and a great one he was. There is however I believe a former head coach still living in Douglas who many seem to have forgotten. He was my head coach when we defeated Kingman in round one of the playoffs we went on to play the eventual state champions Agua Fria, the very next year we lost to Peoria in the first round as I recall we made it a football game against Peoria who went on to win the title. A few years ago he returned to the bulldogs as a volunteer and in doing so helped get the bulldogs back into the playoffs against Arcadia. I was in the stands at Arcadia and I believe had he been left alone in that game with his style of play calling and the players on that team they might have pulled an upset. I am of course refering to Coach Keith. Coach Keith is himself a former bulldog having played in the 1960s. He is a winner he knows what it takes to win in Douglas, why hasn't someone called upon him, my guess however he would not as the players today although very talented may not understand his discipline and approach to the game. All of you who call some on these former coaches retreads need to stop and think these former coaches may be a bit older and many may beleive their style out dated, they are however winners. "

" I agree, for the most part, that some of our players aren't the prototype football athletes and it really isn't thier fault to be honest....It's their parents fault! They really don't make them work hard and hand everything to them in a platter. And to my teammates, I say get your head straight or you'll just be a laughing stock for the rest of your undisciplined lives. As for the suggestions of hiring a former Pop Warner coach...I laugh at you, Pop Warner and High School football are totally different, but obviously you never played football at an elite level. I really don't want the community to support us, all I need are ten other guys that love football and have a passion for this game. It's not the coaches fault if we lose because WE'RE the ones on the field. "

" Let Ellsworth coach!! He is a great coach. But as long as the AD is going to stick his nose in everything and hold grudges, NO ONE will succeed.

Example: Tadeo is a great Baseball coach, and the AD won't let him coach. That man has so much knowledge he can pass on to these kids, but we have to settle for what the AD wants. That's what is wrong with Douglas. Everyone is to busy pointing the finger at someone else. Take responsibility for your own kids. Kids, take responsibility for your actions as well. Douglas needs coaches that know how to win. These two men Know how to win. "

In our day coaches coached with passion and motivation, using some swear words, getting physical, but most important LOVING WHAT THEY DO! They cant do that no more, everyone wants to sue or complain about the coaching methods. As for the imported BP experts, go back where you came from! COACH ELLSWORTH YOU HAVE MY VOTE! "

to put blame where it belongs wrote on Apr 16, 2009 6:03 PM:

" Your first sentence says it all. The sports programs have been terrible for many years, and yet the same people are still coaching. Many kids have come and gone yet the one constant that remains is the adults coaching them. Year in and year out we hear the same old song and dance at the end of each season,(were a young team, no chemistry, wait till next year, so many quit or were ineligible). For once I'd like to hear a coach say I couldn't do it so someone else needs to try. The problem with DUSD athletics is you have many people coaching simply for the extra cash or the benefit of their own kid. Kids recognize this and eventually get away from it. Necas did the best he could with what he had. If is being replaced for his record or interaction with players, the cleanup should include a few more people. Just look up the records of some of these coaches and that will speak for itself. "

" Our teams have been underperforming for YEARS!

Has anybody been to a Pop Warner or Little League game in the last 10 years? These kids show a lot of potential in their early years but most of them decide its much easier to be lazy. Most of these kids would rather cruise, club, or make themselves a quick buck doing God-knows-what than have to report to practice every day AND keep up with their grades. (if you don't believe me, look up the statistics)

Wake up Douglas-its not the coaches, its not the AD, its the STUDENTS who have ruined Douglas athletics. "

" This is on the AD. If a coach isn't properly motivating his players, the AD is paid to do something. If a coach isn't vetted properly in order to ensure he'll live up to the terms of his employment (in action and longevity), the AD is paid to do something. Maybe a retread (e.g. Ellsworth, whoever else is left in Douglas with some coaching experience) is the type of coach the football program needs now. That's where the AD succeeds or fails. That’s where the program succeeds or fails. Good for the kids who are training without adult leadership. I hope to see them up here in Phoenix beating up on Arcadia or some other school in the playoffs. …we’ll back you to stand against the best in the land! "

Basketball hasn't produced since the 70's (spare me the success of this years girl's team, they only beat 2 teams that had a winning record). I agree about soccer, it's too bad Cormier can't coach everything. Instead of doing away with a sport take a look at the AD and coaches. Enough already with the retreads! "

I can tell you that these comments were made from teachers from all of the schools. Just look at the disrespect from Mr. Petit at the meetings. Where is the professionalism?
