Historic skill threatened by lack of practice and new devices - with Bryan Bledsoe, a best-selling author of paramedicine textbooks and clinical professor of emergency medicine and attending physician at the University of Nevada School of Medicine and University Medical Center in Las Vegas. The article reviews the controversies and status of pre-hospital intubation, a method for securing an airway in emergency patients. It traces the history and evolution of intubation skills and training among emergency services personnel, covers success rates and patient outcomes, and identifies methods to practice and improve the success of intubation procedures.
Gandy is a nationally recognized educator for emergency service providers. A former chief paramedic in Honey Grove, Texas, he also previously served as department chair and clinical and continuing education coordinator in the EMS professions program at Tyler Junior College. He has taught Cochise College paramedicine students for the past year.
