Bulldogs rally to beat Tucson High 6-5

Alexis Aguirre’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Tony Young from third lifting the Douglas Bulldogs to a come from behind 6-5 win over the Tucson Badgers Tuesday at Copper King Stadium.

Tucson High led 3-1 going into the bottom of the third when AJ Acosta scored pulling the Dogs within one. Jesus Salazar’s two run double in the fourth scored Acosta and Aguirre giving Douglas a 4-3 lead.

Tucson High responded with two runs in the top of the fifth reclaiming the lead at 5-4.

Jason Sanez’ run in the fifth tied the game at 5-5.

With two out in the bottom half of the seventh Aguirre drove Young in with the winning run.

Jesus Lopez started the game on the hill. He went four innings giving up five runs off nine hits while fanning three and walking four.

Ramon Acosta came on in relief making his first appearance of the season. Acosta, who was part of the state championship soccer team, looked sharp going three innings giving up no runs off one hit while fanning two and walking one.

The Bulldogs had 11 hits in the game. Ryan Valencia hit 3 for 4, Jesus Salazar was 2 for 3; Lopez was 1 for 2, George Hurtado, Oliver Mariscal and Fabian Ochoa each were 1 for 3.

Bulldog baseball coach Gilbert Rojas said Tucson High was the best team his squad has faced this year.

“They’re a pretty good team,” the coach said. “I was pleased we were able to come back and take the win. … I’m hoping this will help our confidence.”

The Bulldogs, 4-3, host Safford High today at 4 at Copper King Stadium.
