Bruce Whetten / Douglas Dispatch Douglas’ Katie Campbell is tagged out at third base in the Lady Bulldogs non-conference game with Tucson High Tuesday. The Lady Bulldogs were one out away from a 2-1 win when Tucson High rallied for four runs and beat Douglas 5-3.

Erika Tapia was the losing pitcher. Tapia went all seven innings, gave up five runs off six hits, fanned eight, walked six and hit two.

Tucson High struck first scoring a run in the top of the third off two walks and two hit batters taking a 1-0 lead.

Tucson maintained its lead going into the bottom of the sixth when Douglas pushed two runs across home plate for a 2-1 edge.

Veronica Tartaglia started things off reaching on an error and Jeanette Palmer then walked. Both runners scored when Nythzia Machado singled.

One out away from taking the win Tapia walked a batter and then gave up a two run double giving Tucson back the lead at 3-2. Another walk followed by another two run double increased the Lady Badgers lead to 5-2.

Douglas scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run on first base when the final out came.

The Lady Bulldogs had seven hits in the game. Tartaglia was 2 for 4 with a double. Jackie Gonzalez 1 for 2, Tapia 1 for 3 with a double, Machado 1 for 3 and Katie Campbell 1 for 3. Nikki Lopez was 1 for 4.

Douglas’ softball coach Abe Grijalva said after the game this was the type of game he felt his girls needed to show up ready to play and be competitive.

“We have an opportunity there at the end to win the game,” he said. “We just couldn’t get it done.”

Grijlava said his team battled and for that he was pleased with their effort.

Coach Grijalva admitted afterwards this was a very winnable game for his team.

“Erika did a tremendous job for us,” he said. “I think there at the end she got a little winded; her speed wasn’t as good as it was at the beginning of the game when she was over powering them. … Tucson High put the ball in play and got the base hits when they needed them and that’s what got them the win.”

The Lady Bulldogs, 7-2, will be off until next Tuesday when they host Cienega in a 4 p.m. game at Douglas High School.
