Bulldog netters win league opener

The Douglas Bulldogs tennis team kicked off Gila Regional play Thursday with a 6-3 win over the Palo Verde Titans.


Joe Owen, playing No. 1 singles for the Bulldogs, fell 0-6, 0-6 to a Palo Verde player who was nationally ranked.

DJ Campas at No. 2 singles, won his match 6-4, 6-1.

At No. 3 singles Spencer Grijalva fell 1-6, 6-3, 6-7 losing the tiebreaker 8-10.

Joaquin Nunez, playing No. 4 singles, won his match 6-3, 6-2.

George Watkins at No. 5 singles, was a 6-1, 7-5 winner.

Istac Villanueva, playing No. 6 singles, was a 6-1, 6-0 winner.

In doubles play Campas and Grijalva fell 4-7 at No. 1 doubles.

Owen and Nunez won their match 8-0 and Watkins and Villanueva were 8-3 winners at No. 3 doubles.

Douglas’ tennis coach Katie Walker said her team played well and she knew it was going to be a tough match especially for Owen.

“I thought we played well in doubles,” she said. “Overall I was pleased with our performance.”

In junior varsity action the Bulldogs posted a 6-1 win.

In singles play Eliseo Daniel fell 3-8, Miguel Castillo won 8-0, Casey Hoyack was an 8-5 winner, Oscar Cervantes an 8-1 winner and Hector Rosales an 8-0 winner.

In doubles play Daniel and Castillo won their match 8-6. Hoyack and Cervantes were 8-0 winners.

The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday hosting Sahuarita in a 3:30 p.m. match at the DHS tennis courts.
