The Douglas Lady Bulldogs tennis team was back on the court Thursday beating the Palo Verde Lady Titans 6-3 in their region opener.

On Friday the Lady Bulldogs lost to Sahuarita by the same score.

Against Palo Verde Alexis Romero, playing No. 1 singles for Douglas, won her match 6-0, 6-0.

Kristi Cormier, playing No. 2 singles, was a 7-6, 6-0 winner.

At No. 3 singles Douglas’ Tanya Nunez was beaten 4-6, 4-6.

In doubles play Douglas’ No. 1 duo of Romero and Cormier won their match 8-3.

Nunez and Kim Cormier lost 6-8 at No. 2 singles and Cordova and Galindo were 8-2 winners at No. 3 singles.

“This was a great match for all our girls.” Douglas’ Coach Brycen Wessen said afterwards. “The older players are finally finding their touch, and I saw the younger players maturing out on the court.”

The coach said Kristy Cormier, Kim Cormier and Valeria Cordova all three went into tiebreakers in their first set and continued to battle.

“Today, we had fun playing tennis again,” he said.

On Friday against Sahuarita Romero won her singles match 6-0, 6-1 while Kristi Cormier fell 2-6, 2-6.

Nunez lost at No. 3 singles 0-6, 1-6, Kim Cormier fell 3-6, 5-7, Galindo lost 4-6, 1-6 and Cordova was a 6-1, 7-6 winner.

In doubles play Romero and Cormier were 8-4 winners. Nunez and Kim Cormier fell 1-8 and Galindo and Cordova were defeated 4-8.

In the lone junior varsity match Friday Joanna Favela lost 6-8.

Coach Wessen said afterwards his team is young and still trying to figure out their opponents different styles of play.

“Yesterday we saw one style, today we saw another,” he said. “Some days we’re on top; others we’re not so lucky.”

The coach said this team is loaded with potential and can be a really good team.

“There are a number of things we need to work on,” he said.

The Lady Bulldogs are off all this next week during which time Coach Wessen will work with his players trying to get them ready for their next match which takes place March 24 against Catalina.
