Sportsmanship on opening day

As president of the Douglas Little League I was given a real sense of pride on opening day Saturday when I saw a real act of sportsmanship between two opposing teams.

Bruce Whetten / Douglas Dispatch David Escarcega throws out the ceremonial first pitch in memory of his late uncle Dominic Aira at Saturday’s Douglas Little League opening ceremonies. Dominic Aira, a former DLL board member, is this years dedicatee.

The Douglas Little League had its opening ceremonies that day and honored the family of our former board member Dominic Aira who was tragically killed in an auto accident earlier this year. Dominic’s nephew, David Escarcega, threw out the ceremonial first pitch in honor of his late uncle.

Following the opening ceremonies it was time to “play ball”. The first game featured Backdrop Photo vs. Border Mart which Backdrop won 11-3.

The second game pitted Southwestern Carpets vs. Ortega’s which Southwestern Carpets would later end up winning 10-6.

Each year thousands of kids play Little League baseball, some are more talented than others. This year we have several kids in our league who are in the early stages of learning the game and are not quite as experienced as some of the others but they love the game just as much and enjoy wearing their uniforms.

One parent even told me her son was so excited for opening day he was asking her on Thursday if it was Saturday yet.

Both Ortega’s and Southwestern Carpets each have players that could be hurt if opposing pitchers would throw at full strength.

As a sign of good sportsmanship Richard Rojas, the coach for Southwestern Carpets and Charlie Catalan, the coach for Ortega’s, both agreed before the game to have their pitchers “lighten up” their throws a little when these particular kids came up to bat.

In the fourth inning one of those kids came up to bat and as promised the pitcher softened his throw to the batter. The kid swung and missed. Next throw the same thing. Then it happened the pitcher threw the ball and the kid swung the bat and hit the ball. His face lit up when he realized what he had done and his coach was yelling at him to run to first base. He managed to get to first with a fielders choice.

As happy as I was for this kid to get a hit I was more pleased to see the congratulations he got from not only his team but also the opposing team as well. The fans were even cheering.

Shortly thereafter it was the other teams turn and their first year player stepped up to bat. At first he was nervous – you could tell by how far he was standing out of the batters box but after he realized the pitcher wasn’t going to “hurl” the ball at him he relaxed. Then it happened – he hit the ball. Unfortunately it was a pop up to the pitcher but the kid was still excited he had hit the ball.

Neither batter impacted the outcome of the game but the sportsmanship I saw that night was indescribable. Words cannot express how proud I am of these two coaches and their teams for showing the sportsmanship they displayed Saturday night.

What has been a long and difficult road for me trying to make sure things were done and ready for the start of the season were made all worth while in a matter of minutes that night. I can honestly say seeing both kids get those hits made my day.

I want to thank all those on my board and off who helped me prepare the field and everything else ready for opening day. A special thanks to Manny Romero who came through with a public address system for us to do the player introductions

This is what Little League baseball is all about – teamwork on and off the field. Opening day is supposed to be special and for two players in particular I know it was.

I hope this is something we can see more of it as the season progresses.

" To Remember 95. Are you involved with the children or are you the parent on the sideline complaining instead of offering any assistance to make the league better? You sure are setting a good example to your child!! Do something constructive and assist in coaching and be a role model, remember the children are the future. Take your child across the line to play, whats the fee 10 dollars? Grow up and be responsible and help solve the problem instead of the problem. Be a role model as the coaches are well most of them apperantly they weren't doing background checks and some of them guys should have not been allowed around the kids. "

" Great article Bruce. It is nice to see some articles that reflect goodness among our community. Thanks to all the coaches for dedicating their time and effort to make baseball a local tradition. "

" Why not try focusing on what this story is about-SPORTSMANSHIP.

Teach your kids that its not about who wins or who loses-its about learning to play the game and learning how to work as a TEAM.

Thanks for your efforts Bruce-Dominic would be proud! "

" to "remember" OMG...get a life. I sure do hope your child that is playing termite does not have your attitude. Have you asked the board members about how the money is spent..it costs lots of money for the lights, insurance, equipment etc. Remember ALL the coaches volunteer their time...do you? I hate the cost also and I know it's really hard on alot of parents, but there is only so much the league can do. Instead of just being "another" complaining parent, why not get more involved and maybe do more stuff like fund raiser to help keep the cost down for next year. "

" I have to ask, sir, where did you get your information? I would love to find a T-Shirt for $3 and a $4 hat. If you can tell me where to find these items at these prices more power to you. In this economy, that would make my life a whole lot easier.

Also, I happen to live with one of those "loser coaches", and he gives everything he can to these kids, making sure they can have a great experience. I wish I would have had a coach like that when I was thier age, I might have stayed out of a bit of trouble, eh?

I have to thank Little League Fan. And I agree, attend one of their board meetings, and bring up those concerns. I'm sure they would be more than happy to answer your questions. "

" I live out of town now but I am from Douglas. I have always taken pride as to where I come from and what Douglas had to offer. Little League was one of my favorites and I enjoy reading the newspaper online. I was sad to read the above comment about "your all fools". I do want to say to the individual to not be afraid to ask the board members about thier spending plan. I am sure that it is available to the community. Feel free to attend thier meetings. You appear angry and I pray that this is not passed on to your child. You are correct to say that this is for the kids, therefore giving you the right to ask questions instead of breaking your brain to bash someone or others involved. It is obvious that your sportsman ship lacks the professionalism it takes to be a good person, parent, neighbor and team player in life itself. Good luck to you and I give props to the Board members, the coaches, parents all involved as you all give your time and effort to make this a fun adventure to those who mean the most to us. Our Kids! " your all fools. $95.00 and all the kids get is a cheap $3.00 t shirt and a $4.00 cap. By the way some of the letters are not on right. What is all the money being raised for. the three all star teams at the end of the year. let everyone pay up so that a bunch of loser coaches can say im the all star coach. this should be for all the kids Bruce. The kids not the sponsors the kids. They pay way much more than the sponsors and instead of nice uniforms you get them crap! I hope my son will have a good little league experience after he leaves termite. "
