Huber Middle School was put in lockdown for approximately one hour due to a perceived threat coming from an individual.

Douglas Police were called at about 9:30 a.m. on April 15 and received a report that a suspicious man was walking in or around the school with what looked like a handgun in his waistband.

After the call, police contacted Huber Middle School and Principal Martin Muecke put the school in lockdown status.

The Douglas Police Department investigated the incident and found the man that was reported. He was walking down Washington Avenue and there was no gun. The man even gave the police authority to search his home and no gun was present.

Following the search, Douglas Police again contacted the school, and Security Chief Luis Greer pulled the school out of lockdown status.

“Lockdown is the protocol that is called for when you suspect an intruder on school grounds,” he said.

“Lockdown” essentially keeps all students in whatever area or class they are in until the status has been removed.

In a note to parents, Muecke said”  This was done in response to a police incident in the neighborhoods bear our school campus. At no point were either students or staff in immediate danger. The lockdown was initiated as a precautionary measure.”

" I first would like to say don't believe everything you read. Especially, if that information is in the Douglas newspaper. That story couldn't be more wrong. If you knew what the security, administrator, police, and BP knew you would be saying that they made a knowledgeable and appropriate decision. I would guess they had and still have a bit more information that's also a bit more correct. Maybe it could have been because of the illegal’s he had with him, or the fact that B.P. saw a gun when he stopped and ran that made him seem suspicious. The fact that the first person the questioned fit the description and that was later straightened out when my husband brought a witness who said it was not him. From that point he was released. The police and Border Patrol caught the real suspect later that morning away from the school. My husband is an agent and I am appalled at the misinformation and lack of correct information that was put in this article! Unless you speak to the police or the place where the incident occurred then you can't know what happened or rely on that information. Or therefore make a decision as to if the proper safety steps were taken. The principal's and the security did a wonderful job keeping the Paul Huber staff and students safe. We should thank them for being prepared and executing the lock down in a safe and in a swiftly manner. "

" I can say for a fact that every door during a lock down is not only locked by that teacher but, it is the job of the security to go and check every single door to make sure they are locked. I know for a fact that this was done. With in less than 1 minute every door in that school was secure. Also each child was given a slip of paper explaining what had occurred that day at school. The school can't force your child to give it to you. I know for a fact that the class you are speaking of received; and each kid was given one. I know this because my child is also in that class. Nothing will ever be flawless but I can say the security and staff did very well. The students also handled the situation well. I would recommend if you have questions/concerns go in and speak to Mr. Mueck the principal. Proud to have my child at Huber. Great job to all! "

" I thank the school for thinking of our children's safety the only concern I have is I just talked to my daughter about this incident, which by the way I just found out about by reading this article because as of yet I have not received the note home & low and behold her class thought it was a drill & her teacher (student teacher) didn't even lock the door! PLEASE make sure your teachers & staff understand the importance of following the rules! We entrust them with the lives of our children.... lets all be smart & safe! "

" You know what I don't get.......? I don't get how we get these inaccurate "reports" of some guy walking by the school "with a gun."

I'm all for locking down schools and keeping the kids safe, but how about a little common sense? Could we be a bit more sure before we act? Action is fine; overaction is wasteful.

What does "a suspicious man was walking in or around the school with what looked like a handgun in his waistband" mean, anyway? What made him suspicious? Suspicious to whom? Was it IN the school or AROUND the school? Was it on the public side of the street? And what "looks like a handgun," anyway?

I'd like to think all of these questions had been answered before any action was taken, but I wouldn't bet on it.

What if the guy had actually had a gun in his house? (There's one in my house... and probably in lots of houses.) Would he have been taken "downtown" for further questioning, even when he didn't do anything wrong? That's the disappointing part -- "

" Why is it that when this happened you make comments as to the principal and where he was. He was the person that decided to go into Lockdown in the first place. After school security did a great job insuring the safety of the students and the staff, the school was taken out of Lockdown; after being told that suspect was arrested at his home. No one thinks about the people who work to secure the school unarmed for the students and staff. This includes not only security but custodians who stepped up to help without being asked. Thank you to the security staff, in house monitor, custodians, and administrators, for doing a great job! My child felt safe throughout the Lockdown and after it had ended. Thank you again! "

" Ryan-student and faculty safety is the TOP priority. Why did this man feel the need to walk around a school campus while school was in session?!

Maybe you've been living under a rock for the last 10 years (its been 10 years since Columbine) but if you don't have pertinent school-related business YOU DON'T BELONG ON SCHOOL GROUNDS DURING SCHOOL HOURS.

Ryan-if you're so proud to be an American maybe you should also be up-to-speed on our laws here in the States: its is ILLEGAL to carry a WEAPON on SCHOOL GROUNDS.

A big thank you to the administration and security staff at Huber. Let's keep our kids and teacher safe and idiots off our school grounds.

    GOD BLESS AMERICA! "

" To RYAN TREJO Yes this is America and we are allowed to carry guns but with everything that is going on with shootings in schools it's better safe than sorry! You can tell that you have no children in the school district because you could care less about the safety of our children in the school district!!!! "

No where does it say the police asked to search his home, the man volunteered it.

The only "tryanny" here is reading unsubstantiated rants. "

" I can't believe the Gestapo has done it again. Just because this poor man walked around the school doesn't mean that he was going to kill/rob/rape anyone at the school. Heck, the "police" even wanted to check his house with no reason, and the poor man, probably threatened, gave them access. I am tire of the Gestapo intruding into our homes and taking our rights. I say down with the police and down with tyranny. We are in America, not the former Soviet Union, Cuba, or North Korea.

I also feel sorry for the poor children inside the school. The Gestapo took away a precious hour of education from them that they will never earn back. Lockdown is pretty much an hour of torture where these poor, innocent children have to be crouched down on their knees until the "threat" is eliminated.

I am so sick of the Government and law enforcement intruding into our lives and taking away the education from our children. Heck, I even forgot, Arizona is an open carry state. If the guy wanted to tote a "gun" that was exposed, then he can, it's his God given right.

That is all, God bless our rights, and God bless America! "
