An unattended pot of menudo left cooking on a stove resulted in extensive damage to a home in the 2700 Block of 15th Street displacing a Douglas family Saturday.

Douglas Fire Chief Mario Nova said the call came in at 1:52 p.m. when a passerby noticed smoke coming out of one of the side windows.

Two minutes later the fire department was on the scene. Nova said when his crews first arrived they saw the smoke coming from the house and upon making entrance to the home saw the kitchen fully engulfed in flames.

“The family who lives there was very lucky,” Nova said. “They could have lost the whole house.”

While there was smoke damage throughout the house the fire was contained to the kitchen destroying the stove and the cabinets above and around the stove.

“The pot was burned cleaned through,” the chief said. “They were fortunate the person passing by saw the smoke and called 911.”

Chief Novoa reported the family informed him they have had problems with the stove before.

4th Street fire update

The investigation into a fire that destroyed a home in the 200 block of Fourth Street two weeks ago continues Chief Novoa said.

Investigators from the Douglas Police and Douglas Fire Departments are working to determine the cause of the blaze.

The four bedroom, two bath home, located behind Border Mart and Ortiz Lumber and across the street from Auto Zone has since been destroyed leaving nothing but two trees on a vacant lot.
