Despite economy, Cake Auction brings in $20,000

Despite the struggling economy in Douglas the 46th Annual DARC Mothers Day Cake Auction was another big success as an estimated 137 cakes helped bring in an estimated $20,000 to the local DARC.

DARC Director Gary Clark said the Douglas community really stepped up in helping his organization.

“It was heart warming,” he said. “A lot of our local businesses and residents are struggling right now and yet they took money out of their budgets to help people with disabilities. … It was definitely a miracle.”

The event started shortly after 1 p.m. and Cox Communications bought the first cake for $100.

There were numerous bidding wars throughout the afternoon on various cakes but it was Vicky Merritt’s 20-pound cake that brought the highest bid of $375 purchased by Mayor Dr. Mike Gomez.

The Brooks Robinson autographed baseball bats sold for $150 and $155. The two Gaylord Perry autographed baseballs went for $60 each. A ruby ring sold for $300.

Clark said the number of cakes sold is up from last year but the overall amount is down slightly.

“Still its money that we can use to get matching funds from federal monies,” he said. “All the money raised will stay here in Douglas to pay the salaries of our clients.”

Clark said numerous people really helped out with the event some of which include the Gadsden Hotel, Thomas Home Furnishings, Howard Henderson of KDAP Radio who donated over six hours of air time and Mary Maza, Liz Ames and Anna Rivera.

“Only in Douglas can you see something like this,” Clark said. “The people here are just fantastic.”
