An effort to non-tender three current school administrators failed at a special meeting of the Douglas Unified School District Governing Board.

The board reviewed the status of assistant principals at Huber Middle  School, Clifford Dunlap, and at Ray Borane Middle School, Rene Villalva, but in both cases failed to approve their contract non-renewal for economic reasons by identical 3-2 votes, with board members Susan Kramer and Mario Ramos voting for  the contract non-renewal, and Board President Chuck Hoyack, Patricia Lopez and Ed Rivera voting to keep the administrators.

In a similar move, the board denied an action that would have not renewed the contract of Rafael Ortiz, principal at Stevenson School.

After a 15 minute executive session to get legal advice, the board also denied a non-renewal of his contract, which received applause from the audience in attendance.

Ortiz still is assigned to his home pending completion of an investigation concerning the manner in which 100 English Language Learner students were moved from the program.

In other personnel matters, the board denied the non-renewal ofthe contract of certified instructor Katie Cormier; and approved the release of contract of Tere Trahin with no assessed damages.

In the end, after all the discussion about not offering contracts to certain individuals, the board approved certified staff and administrators and directors contract renewals for 2009-10.

Also, the board approved the request from Doug Wright, a DHS teacher, to resign at the end of the current school year, and a retirement request from Transportation Supervisor Gilbert Guiterrez for July 1, 2009.

The board also approved the hiring of Special Education teacher Christine James for the 2009-10 school year at a rate of $33,790 plus additional Proposition 301 monies.

The board also approved the appointment of Susan Kramer as an official delegate to represent DUSD with the Arizona School Boards Association.
