The Brekhus family has been chosen to be this years Douglas ARC Mothers Day Cake Auction dedicatees.

Bruce Whetten/Douglas Dispatch photo Gary Clark, Executive Director of the DARC congratulates the Brekhus family, who have been chosen as this year’s dedicatees. “For 21 years, the family has donated the use of the historic Gadsden Hotel lobby for the annual cake auction,” Clark said.

“They have supported the Douglas ARC in many ways,” DARC Executive Director Gary Clark said. “For the past 21-years they have donated the use of their historic lobby in the Gadsden Hotel for the cake auction.”

Clark said Robin and her daughter McKayla have formed a great mother, daughter combination as cake auctioneers.

“We truly appreciate all the support they’ve given Douglas ARC and the citizens of Douglas with disabilities,” Clark said.

The Brekhus family joins a long list of other notable dedicatees some of which include Liz Ames, Raul Montano, Ana Rivera and the original founders of the DARC Mary Causey, Ruth Elliott and Vi Heisey.

The cake auction is in its 46th year and continues to raise much needed funds to help the program survive.

“We’re facing a 10 percent across the board cut right now,” Clark said. “Every little bit we raise will help.”

The DARC brought in an estimated $25,000 at the cake auction last year and raised $10,000 from the carne asada Montano held at Border Mart earlier this month.

Clark estimates 120 cakes will be available for auction Sunday along with two baseball bats autographed by Brooks Robinson and two baseballs signed by Gaylord Perry.

The bats and baseballs were donated by the Arizona Lottery, Clark said. In addition there is a ruby ring donated by an anonymous donor.

The cake auction begins at 1 p.m. and will be broadcast live on KDAP 96.5 FM. Phone bids on the cakes and other items will also be accepted by calling 364-4967.
