Mother Nature’s brief interruption of showers did not dampen the spirits of the Douglas High School seniors or their guests at Friday night’s Commencement ceremonies.

An estimated 225 graduates received their diplomas much to the delight of thousands who had filled the football stadium.

Salutatorian Alexis Romero and co-valedictorians’ Jessica Ackley, Alex Ames, Juan Mariscal and Julio Tanabe all spoke briefly and about their years at DHS and what the future could hold for this group of seniors.

Mariscal even joked in his speech that after four years of hard work, essays and tests he gets the news he’s one of four valedictorians’ to be honored and as a reward for that he has to write one more essay.

Showers fell before, during and after the event stopping periodically. Fireworks filled the sky after the 2009 graduates had received their diplomas and for the first time in school history the event was being broadcast live over the internet thanks to the hard work of the schools IT Dept.

Afterwards the graduates moved to the Country club for project graduation where many of them stayed until it ended at 4 p.m. hoping to land some of the bigger prizes that were going to be given out at the end.

" Bruce was out taking photos - why doesnt the Dispatch publish those photos or do some sort of a slide show with them. That would be great for many people to see! Check out some of the bigger newspapers, they all have slide shows on featured events in the city! "
