The 4A Division II all Gila Region team was announced last week.

Nine members of the 2009 Douglas Lady Bulldogs received post season honors.

Douglas’ coach Abe Grijalva was named the Coach of the Year; pitcher Erika Tapia was selected the Player of the Year.

Landing first team honors were Katie and Lina Campbell and Jackie Gonzalez of Douglas; Abrie Bustamante and Lysandra Gomez both of  Sahuarita; Yvonne Nava and Chela Romero of  Palo Verde; Rosemary Anderson, Santa Rita; Jennifer Huebner, Amphitheater and Hannah Simpson, Rio Rico.

Second team honors went to Nikki Lopez, Douglas; Lyzette Creason and Monique Martinez of  Sahuarita; Victoria Chavez and Janese Timmons of Palo Verde; Lianna Zamora and Lyndsey Colvin of Santa Rita; Nereida Castaneda, Amphitheater, Grace Lopez, Catalina and Elizabeth Valle, Rio Rico

Honorable mention honors went to Veronica Tartaglia, Victoria Mariscal, Amy Victoria of Douglas; Alex Orozco, Lanie Rieger, Bianca Montoya, Patience West from Sahuarita;

Palo Verde’s Sierra Rios, Shelby Smiley; Santa Rita’s Michelle Fatovich, Bianca DiFlo, Sellena Urias, Geva Cruz; Amphitheater’s Amaris Escobedo, Rachel Oros, Catie Hartwig, Vanessa King; Catalina’s Darcy Earnhardt and Rio Rico’s Marilyn Sanchez, Monique Quiroz and Erika Islas.

Douglas’ softball coach Abe Grijalva said this is quite and honor because the selection comes from the other coaches in the region.

“A coach cannot vote for themselves or their own players,” he said. “It was nice to get the recognition for the girls and myself because this is what the other coaches are seeing. … Because of these girls I was nominated and got coach of the year”

Grijlava said there was very little doubt as to who the best player in the Gila Region was this year.

“She has just been so dominant,” the coach said of his young pitcher who is only a junior. “There have been games where she is just so over powering opposing teams can’t touch her.”

Tapia is 25-1 on the season with her only loss coming to Tucson High. She four no-hitters to her credit; has faced 591 batters, recorded 211 strikeouts, given up 50 walks, has allowed 63 hits in 154 innings.

 Opposing teams have scored only 32 runs on her in 26 games.
