Lady Bulldog tracksters second at regionals

TUCSON – The Douglas Lady Bulldogs track team came in second place at the Gila Regional meet Saturday.


Catalina won the meet with 139 points; Douglas was second with 112.5, Palo Verde third with 105, Sahuarita fourth with 81 and Rio Rico fifth with 71.

The Lady Bulldogs had three region champions: Jordan Arvayo in the 400-meters; Aileen Moreno in the pole vault and Amanda Ames in the high jump.

Arvayo ran a 1:03 in the 400-meters; Moreno vaulted 7’6” and Ames jumped 4’6” in their respective events.

In the 100-meter hurdles Patty Countryman came in third place with a time of 18:69; Brianna Salazar was fourth with a 19:47.

Vanessa Valdez placed fourth in both the shot put and discus with throws of 24’4” in the shot and 72’8” in the discus.

In the pole vault Jeanette Valencia came in second with a 7’6”; Ames was third at seven-feet and Patty Countryman fourth at 6’6”.

Douglas’ 4x100 relay team of Lizzy Clark, Valencia, Countryman, and Arvayo came in third with a time of 53:47.

The 4x400 relay team of the same four girls placed fourth with a time of 4:32.

The 4x800 relay team of Natalie Ramirez, Micah Montez, Johanna Urquijo, Aileen Moreno also came in fourth place finishing with a time of 12:14.

Douglas’ coach Donna Savill said the top three athletes in their events qualified for state. Those who qualified and their events are: Amanda Ames – high jump and pole vault; Aileen Moreno – pole vault, Jordan Arvayo – 400-meters and 4x100 relay; Lizzy Clark – 4x100 relay; Jeanette Valencia –4x100 relay and pole vault and Patty Countryman – 100 Hurdles and 4x100 relay

“I am very proud of our team for working very hard all season, for having a great attitude and focusing on improving with every meet,” the coach said. “We have a young team who showed courage throughout the season. For our team to place second at regional’s against seasoned athletes’ shows the potential we will have for next year.”

State takes place this weekend in Phoenix
