Former Douglas High School tennis player Stephanie Shelton landed post season honors in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Shelton, the daughter of Ray and Paula Shelton, just completed her junior year at Western New Mexico University.

The Mustangs struggled as a team overall finishing 5-18, 4-4 in league play and tied for fifth in the seven team region. Stephanie’s parents report she had a 10-3 conference record in singles play and a 13-10 mark overall. In doubles she was 11-2 and 15-8.

WNMU played some quality Division I schools like UTEP, the University of Iadho and Iowa, Oklahoma State, Kanasas State and New Mexico State University.

The WNMU tennis team ended its season late last month with a 7-2 loss to Metro State College of Denver, Colo. in the first round of the RMAC tournament. Shelton had one of the two wins beating her opponent 6-3, 6-2 in singles.

WNMU had just three players land post season honors in singles play and Shelton was one of the three joining another teammate on the third team squad. The other WNMU girl landed second team honors.

Shelton also received second team doubles honors as well. In week 10 of the season she was named the RMAC’s top player after posting a 2-1 record that week against Colorado Christian, Metro State and Nebraska-Kearney. All this was done while she was playing No. 4 singles. In doubles that week Shelton was also 2-1 with her only loss coming to Nebraska-Kearney. As a team WNMU was 1-2 that week.

Shelton is not the only former DHS tennis player to play for WNMU. Elisa Owen also plays but saw limited playing time this past season. Stats for her were not available.
