Look on the bright side of life
Money doesn’t buy happiness. If you take a look around, you’ll discover that there are joyful benefits to the recession. Not simply monetary opportunities in real estate, airfare, cheap stocks or from businesses struggling and discounting prices or liquidating and going under but in your personal life. It’s an involuntary pause in your pursuit of happiness. It gives you much needed time to reflect, create new goals, and reprioritize your life. While you still need money to pay your bills, you’ve probably realized there’s a lot to be thankful for, too. What benefits have you seen?

Stretch the meat, stretch the budget
It’s a no-brainer: Take the most expensive ingredient in a meal (usually meat, poultry or fish), and use less of it. Then take the ingredients that cost less — grains, vegetables, legumes — and use more of them. Cha-ching! Money in the bank.

How to buy souvenirs on a budget
Souvenirs can be expensive. I suggest bringing home pieces of the scenery, such as rocks, sand or shells, to display in mason jars or in your garden. Or press flowers and leaves. Of course, check that there aren’t any rules against taking these items. You can take plenty of photos, and bring home maps, magazines, postcards and menus. Remember that gift sets can be broken up into individual gifts, too. The first tip is a great idea. You can look for flea markets, dollar stores or online auctions before or after your trip, too.

Takeout favorites made easy
You’re tired, you’re cranky, you “feel like Chinese,” or maybe pizza. You reach for the phone — but wait! There’s a better way. It will be healthier, tastier and quite possibly cheaper. It will fill your home with delicious smells and not generate the waste of takeout containers and pizza boxes. It does, however, involve some effort: cooking.

Save money online
An Internet connection is frugal. When given the choice between cable television and an Internet connection, frugalitarians choose being online hands down. They’ll give up their landline phone, dryer, dishwasher, going to the movies and eating out, but don’t mess with their computer — and who can blame them when it pays for itself? There are a bunch of ways to save money online
