Project Graduation needs your dollar

Published/Last Modified on Wednesday, May 20, 2009 5:29 PM MDT

The PTSO  is asking those attending graduation this year to contribute $1 to assist with funding for Project Graduation.

“We will be accepting your contribution at the gate upon entry.  This small donation would greatly help in our efforts to give your graduate a night of fun in a safe environment.  We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to watching your graduate receive his/her diploma,” said Marina Montano, President of the DHS PTSO.

”Project Graduation” is a party given to our graduates on graduation night, to celebrate their accomplishments and to have a good time with their classmates on their special night.  Project Graduation ensures that your son/daughter can enjoy a night of celebration in a drug free and alcohol free environment.

Project Graduation will be held at the Douglas Golf Club following graduation. There will be music, food and door prizes through out the night with a grand prize cash drawing at the end of the night.  We hope that you will encourage your son/daughter to attend.  All graduates may bring one guest.

" For as many years as Project Graduation has been around, this is an "alcohol free environment". This is true as to any city that hosts one of these events. It has always been held at the Douglas Country Club and the bar has NEVER been opened. Unfortunately, the owner of Antonio's Bar and Grill is in a financial bind which is why he opened his bar that very night. One of the Project Graduation attendees who is also a school district employee is known to fraternize with many of the young women who received their diplomas that very night. He was oberserved on numerous occasions that night as to going into the bar and bring alcohol back into the club. The PTSO President should have made sure the bar was shut down that night as it has for the past 10 years. Unfortunately Graduation Night was not an "alcohol free environment" this year. Mr. Carlos "Yogi" Ortiz financial difficulties and the PTSO President's lack of knowledge made this year's event a disappointment. "

" Project Graduation kept my son from going across the Border. He had a great time, he knew this would be the last time to enjoy his friends since he is leaving for college. The organizers had games, music, food, prizes and great supervision. The party was alcohol and drug free, something that is not the case in Agua Prieta. My son said he had a blast and his friends did too. Theank you organizers you did a terrific job! I wasn't worried about my child I new he was in good hands. "

" Thank you DHS PTSO for all your hard work on project graduation. As for FYI the bar was open the DHS security was there and so was PTSO members with spouses and you act like the grads were in the bar, the grads didn't even try to go into the bar. Yogi would never allows this to happens. It's not any different than the Winter Ball being at the Gadsden Hotel. FYI you need to get involved before you speak out, all business deserve to make a living. It parents like you that never get involved and criticism others for what they have done or are doing. Just there to make things worst you should be thanking these people for taking the time and effort for making your child night a great one. Please post your name and number so we can call you next year maybe you have a better place we could host project graduation. "

" Project Graduation had great security measures. The kids never went into the area where the bar was. In fact as a chaparone I have to say the kids were awesome and the security was first rate. Along with District security, the Rangers, parents and Police it was very well supervised. The bar was closed on the side where the kids were and patrons had to go around through another entrance. There were no problems and kids were safe and enjoyed the food, music and prizes until 4 in the morning. Whoever you are you must have been sitting in the bar wishing you could go into the Party. As a parent it was the best Project Graduation because so many parents were there also and our kids were not in Mexcio. "

" Some alcohol & drug free environment! Antonio's was open for business...complete with karaoke. Parents, is this the type of environment you wanted for your kids on graduation night? Shame on the management of Douglas Golf Club/Antonio's for not closing the bar and concentrating on DHS 2009 graduates. "
