U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers arrested a man after he had run from CBP Officers in order to avoid inspection.

On Saturday, May 30, at approximately 11 p.m., CBP Officers were screening traffic when they came in contact with 29-year-old-man identified as a resident of Douglas.  As the CBP Officers approached him to conduct an inspection, the man became nervous and ran back to Mexico.  Later that same day the man tried to enter the U.S. again by attempting to blend in with the legitimate pedestrian traffic. One of the CBP Officers recognized him as the prior absconder and the man was arrested.

The 29-year-old Douglas manwas assessed a penalty in the amount of $5000 under 19USC1436 and 19USC1433 (Penalties for violations of arrival, reporting, entry, and clearance requirements).

“When arriving from a foreign country everyone has to report to designated area such as a port of entry or international airport for inspection” said Ernestine Morris, Director of Passenger Operations at the Douglas Port of Entry” it does not matter if you walk away or run away, or if you go north or south; if you leave with out proper authorization there will be serious consequences. The security of our nation depends on the identification and screening of each individual person arriving from a foreign country. The laws and policies that govern our national security will not be mocked and we are prepared to apply the full application of the law to those that attempt to evade.”

The man was turned over to the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement for further investigation.
