Even though school has just ended, the Douglas Unified School District Governing Board spent most of its June meeting preparing for the coming year.

During the meeting, the board:
• Approved a donation of $1,350 for Douglas High School from the AZ Community Foundation; donation of $73.50 for Sarah Marley Elementary School from Johnson Historical Museum; and donation of one case of hand soap for each district school from Colgate Palmolive Company for tits “Lather Up for Good Health” program.
Approved second reading of revisions to Police GCD “Professional Staff Vacations and Holidays” and Policy GDD, “Support Staff Vacations and Holidays.”
• Approved the hiring of English teacher Caryn Ice, $28,400; Sixth grade teacher, Connie Scherden, $39,500; Special Ed teacher, Ruth De Boer, $39,500; Instructional Coach, Rory Baumgartner, $40,670; Special Ed teacher, Janis Hoffman, $38,200; Second grade teacher, Suzette Rico-Vildosola, $30,400; Sixth grade teacher, Stephanie Tsuya, $28,400; YTP Coordinator/teacher, Mark Miller, $34,300; and Math teacher Jesus Obregon, $39,500.
Also, Eighth grade teacher, Ana Daniel, $28,400; Special Ed teacher, Hilda Robles, $39,900; Special Ed teacher, Mason Blumenfeld, $34,300; Elementary teacher, Stacy Zettel, $28,400; Social studies teacher, Susan Molina, $34,400; Math coach, Jean Tsuya, $45,116; Educational Technology coordinator, Paula Clough, $39,178; Elementary teacher, Jeffrey Haas, $28,400; Girls PE teacher, Hayley Fuller, $29,600; Sixth grade teacher, Amanda McDougal, $28,400; English teacher, Camilla Altree, $28,800 and Counselor, Vicki Payne, $35,288.
• Approved reading and math coaches Margaret Waag, Lori Simmons, Angelica Rios,. Cynthia Bohmfalk, Rosella Melgoza, Debra Thuma, and Angelica Chavez, Reading; Anna Maria Majarres and Melissa Rodriguez, Math; Jana Selchow, Teacher Induction; and Ana Samaniego and Denise Cox, ELD Coach.
• Approved the hiring of Head Football Coach Dick Keith, and assistants Ron Ellsworth, Clint Hill, Levi Salazar, Daniel Ellsworth, Ron Shelton, Abe Grijalva, and Gilbert Rojas. Keith was also hired as the summer weight room instructor.
• Hired Cynthia Ortega as principal at a salary of $55,000.
Approved hiring of summer school staff Hector Moreno, Arturo Moreno, Hector Gomez, Maria Garcia-Ford, and Gilbert Rojas, teachers; Jody Pirtle and Amy Paulmeyer, Child Find; and Yolanda Caruso, nurse.
• Approved additional contractual days for Albert Young, 30 days; Brita Groves, 45 days; and Margaret Schmidt, 12 additional days.
• Approved addenda for additional duties/responsibilities for Beverly Enriquez, Carolyn Toland and Sally Hamilton, $10,000 each; Sandy Uterharedt, head teacher at ELC, $5,138; Yolanda Caruso, District head nurse, $3,000; Janice Fritsche, Occupational Therapist, $13,325; Albert Young, district printing, $6,000.
• Approved addenda for ESL and/or bilingual endorsement for certified instructors Gloria Lopez, Andrea Overman, Claudia Leon, Cynthia Ortega, Mary Good, Rafael Ortiz and Leanne Marston; and additional adjustments for Good, Ortiz and Marston.
• Approved addenda for additional duties and responsibilities for biomedical training for Donna Savill and Andrea Arnejo.
• Approved job descriptions for School Psycholgist and Counseling Psychologist/Behavior Specialist.
Approved retirement request from Judy Herbert following the 2009-10 school year, resignation of Monica Del Rincon following 2008-09 year.
Approved parent liaisons Yvette Arias, Martha Flores, Amanda Rubio, Terri Quijada and Natalie Rios; data specialist Josephina Gonzalez, data support clerk Darlene Grainger; and counseling psychologist Scott Muller.
• Approved summer support staff Lester Ackerman and Elizabeth Gonzales.
• Approved hiring transportation coordinator Santos Luis Greer at a salary of $49,736.
• Denied a salary adjustment from $19.43 to $35.14 for Kim Kemery.
• Approved revisions to job descriptions for Alternative to Suspension monitor, YTP transitional specialist and Parent Lisison.
• Approved resignations of Patricia Valdez, Gricelda Hernandez and Hannah Hurtado and retirement of Julia Valenzuela.
• Hired parent liaison Blanca T. Rojas, and student worker (DECA store) Hector Rosales.
• Reviewed current bond status from Mark Reader of Stone and Youngberg, bond counsel.
• Approved 301 performance pay plan for 2009-10 school year.
• Approved contract renewals for Educational Services, Inc., SEI Solutions, The Professional Group, Quick & Associates/ALEKS program, Education Based Services, Exceptional Educational Services, Heinffeld & Meech and Janet Carulli/Cumberland Therapy Services.
• Approved emergency procurement of parts and materials for repair of water heater at Joe Carlson.
• Approved first reading of revisions to policies on “Students Fees, Fines, and Charges” and to policy exhibit “Student Fees, Fines and Charges.”
• Approved front end of “Nurse/Professional Staff Salary Schedule” policy.
• Approved out-of-state travel for David Diaz, DHS CTE teacher, to attend the Project Lead The Way Pre-Engineering 2009 at New Mexico State University; and for Jean Tsuya at attend the Digi-Block Summer Institute in Massachusetts in July.
• Approved a leave of absence for Leyla Secheslingloff.
The next regular board meeting will be on July 7.

Who gives a rat's tail how long he has been with the kids. He can still take them to the snack bar after the games because that's all he did for them during the season.

Good luck to the football team. The head coach changed - everything else remained the same.... hmmmmm What happened to coach Long - he is the one that has been working with the kids since the end of last season.... once again hmmmmmmmm......
