According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, at 3 p.m. that day, Border Patrol was contacted regarding four men in the area carrying large packs. When agents responded, they found a man “wandering and incoherent” near the base of the mountains.
The agents provided the man with water and called the Douglas Fire Department for medical assistance. When medics arrived, the man had collapsed. They attempted to stabilize him, but he became unresponsive and died at the scene despite the lifesaving efforts of the medics.
The sheriff’s office was contacted to retrieve the body, which was sent to the Cochise County Medical Examiners Office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
An identification card on the body identified the man as being from Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico. The Mexican Consulate was notified and will assist in contacting the next of kin, the release said.
