Juan Oliver Mariscal has been invited to play in the Fourth Annual Coca-Cola Academic All-Star Classic which is scheduled for this Sunday at the Surprise Recreation Campus.

This game will feature 40 of the top scholar athletes from the state of Arizona.

The Valley Metro Team will be coached by John Hemsely from Dysart High School and the Outstate Team will be coached by Rob Wenzel formerly of Pusch Ridge Academy.

Mariscal, son of John and Gloria Mariscal, played outfield and was a designated  hitter for the Bulldogs this past season landing first team all-conference honors.

Douglas’ baseball coach Gilbert Rojas said the criteria for the event included having a 3.5 or better grade point average.

“Plus he was involved in a bunch of other community activities,” Rojas said.

Mariscal is the third player from Douglas to play in this game. Zaul Tapia and Jake Tadeo are the previous two.

Romero receives scholarship

Former DHS tennis player Alexis Romero has been awarded a $6,000 United States Tennis Association Scholarship.

Romero was selected based on her academic excellence, her participation in USTA or organized tennis programs and activities and community involvement.

Romero, daughter or Mario and Monica Romero, will attend the University of Arizona this fall where she will major in physiology in the U of A’s College of Medicine. Romero has also received the Wildcat Excellence Award.

Romero is a four-year member of the DHS tennis program. She finished fourth in the state this past year in singles play.

Romero said she would like to thank Mrs. Paula Shelton, Mr. John Manjarres and Mrs. Lisa Watkins for their help in the application process.
