The Douglas Unified School District Governing Board failed to call for a bond issue election due to a lack of a second during a special meeting last week.

Bonds are sold for capital construction and equipment, but cannot be used for the everyday operation of the district, so none of the bond money could be used for such items as salaries or benefits.
An issue was being looked at this time because the current issue being paid for runs out in 2009-10.
If the new issue is approved by voters, once the bonds were sold, the secondary tax rate would actually be less than this tax year. The impact on individual taxpayers would be based on the assessed value of the home.
The preliminary list of projects would include:
• Clawson Elementary multi-purpose room, $1,205,550
• Athletics facilities improvements, $1,534,265
• Improvements at Stevenson & Huber, $973,983
• DHS ADA lift/landing (5th & 6th wing), $705,000
• Roofing improvements (various), $2,620,026
Total estimated for these projects, $7,038.824
Other projects being considered were also:
• DHS gymnasium (new), $11,351,100
• RBMS gymnasium ADA lift, $312,500
The board may set one additional special meeting prior to the deadline for calling for an election in early July.
The board is still examining the cost for a single item election, which would be held in November 2009.
No calling for an election has yet to be approved, and any bond issue would have to be approved by a majority of the district voters.
