All-Star play begins

District 8 All-Star Little League play began Monday at five different locations in southern Arizona.


The 9-10 year old all-stars, coached by Johnny Pedrego and Jerry Grijalva, posted a 10-9 8 inning win over the San Pedro all-stars in first round action in Sierra Vista.

Douglas’ 10-11 year old all-stars, coached by Monchi  and Eddie Gonzalez, had a first round bye and didn’t play until Tuesday night. In first round action of that tournament, which is being played at the 15th Street Park, Nogales beat Rio Rico 6-3.

Nogales and Douglas went head to head Tuesday night.

No score from that game was availableat presstime.

The 11-12 year old all-stars coached by Efrain Elias and David Rose, beat Rio Rico 7-5 in first round action in Nogales Monday.

Douglas will play later on this week in second round action.

At the 13-14 year old tournament in Willcox Monday, the Douglas all-stars fell to Rio Rico 11-10.

The  Douglas all-stars are coached by Eddie Hurtado, Paco Esquer and Shawn Leigh.

The senior all-stars, coached by Eliseo Daniel, kicked off play Tuesday night.

No score was available at presstime from their game.

The District 8 finals will be Friday, Saturday or Monday depending on how tournament play goes and the Mother Nature cooperates.

State takes place next week  at four different sites around Arizona.

    " Randy, if you are such an expert why don't you volunteer to umpire? The League hired Certified Umpires for the Tournament Games held in Douglas. As for the rest of the District, you would have to contact the Tournament Director for each age group. Put your money where your mouth is and volunteer your time instead of sitting on the sidelines complaining!!!! "
