Individuals taking part in extracurricular activities this year at Douglas High School or the Middle Schools can expect to pay to play.

At a special board meeting last month the DUSD #27 Governing Board adopted a new activity fee schedule.

The proposed fee schedule for the 2009-2010 school year states no family household shall pay more than $200.

“All fees encountered may be contributed to the DUSD Extracurricular Fund and claimed for a credit of up to $200 on your Arizona Income Tax,” DUSD officials said in a press release. “Any student that qualifies for free or reduced lunch may have these fees waived.”

The fees shall be charged but not limited to vocational and weight lifting classes, Driver’s Education, Student Activity Clubs, Art, Performing Arts and Interscholastic Sports.

Douglas’ Athletic Director Randy Walker said the fees will not have to be paid all at once and can be paid off as the individuals take part in the various programs.

“All activities will be paid through my office,” Walker said.

Walker says right now he doesn’t see this having that much of an impact since the various fall and summer youth leagues all charge to play.

“It may affect some sports,” he said. “I think $50 is pretty reasonable for what the kids get.”

Walker said athletic insurance has gone up and the DUSD is paying an estimated $9,000 per year just on that alone. Then there is the cost of the officials for the games plus meals and equipment.

DUSD began changing for most entrance to most athletic events last year and Walker said he had some complaints especially when it came time for baseball but most of that money went to pay the officials.

Football practice will start Aug. 3 while the remaining sports begin Aug. 10.

The Bulldog football season begins Aug. 28 with the annual rivalry game  at Bisbee.

Below are the fees imposed for 2009-2010

Interscholastic Activities – DHS  ------$50 per activity

Interscholastic Activities – Middle School ------$25 per activity

Student Activities (all levels) -----------------$2

Art Classes – DHS ---------------------------$10

Career/technical fields – DHS --------------$10

Performing Arts------------$10

Weightlifting – DHS -------------------------$15

Driver’s Education -------------------------$125

    " Mr. Blasky,
Why you report these stories in such a manner, I will never know. First, state law regarding these activities which receive tax credit donation dollars are REQUIRED to charge a fee. The district has been collecting these credits in violation of this provision. Second, The district knew this for years and has HAD a fee schedule that they never enforced (potential violation of law here) and finally our current administration is concerned with the ongoing violations of state law and bringing the district into compliance. These were all reported at the same board meeting and I wonder why you choose not to include these little tidbits of information? "

" This may actually benefit the kids by having to work for something instead of being given something. I think the fees are way too low. The city sports charge more and they have quite a few kids participating. "

" It's 50 bucks....cmon, stop crying. Lets think about this. How many times during a three month period do you take your family out for dinner? Now add up the prices of those meals. 3 months....and your telling me you cant afford that? STOP CRYING! Donate plasma, get food at the Food Bank, have a yard sale, recycle any can you find in the street, EARN YOUR MONEY...stop spending money at fast-food/dining, start re-thinking your budget and adjust your lives. OH and get off your butts and do something to come up with 50 measly little dollars. The sad thing is: Nobody these days seem to have the energy/will to go the extra mile for their kids anymore....seems sad. I spend 50 bucks on crap per week! I dont have a career, I have a job....I can afford it. STOP CRYING! "

" It's about time Douglas schools get on board. My son as a Freshman student had to come up with $540.00 to play Freshman Baseball and this is in New Mexico. We had some fundraising but it really was up to parents to take part in this. If you decide to fundraise you paid $540 for your son/daughter to play baseball/softball. This is insane. Why would you cry for a $50 fee. "

" If Ray Borane Middle School has to wear uniforms why would it be cheaper! That is even more things that I have to by for my daughter. And then tan skirts below the knee! With a Polo shirt! This is crazy we should get rid of Mr. Sherman! Why is it that the other middle school does not have to wear uniforms?! I even went to speak to Mr. Sherman and to find out that he is coaching basketball in Canada, when he is supposed to be working. Come on school board what is going on? This district is paying an administrator to not be at the school, not doing anything even related to helping these kids, and this is allowed!! Who approved this the board, Mr. Pettit? We need to get rid of who ever said that this all was okay! I think we as parents should go to the board meeting and speak for our kids! "

" If you lived anywhere else you would have to pay a lot more than these minor fees for your children to participate. You're complaining about these fees but you fork over a lot more money so that your kids can play Little League, AYSO, softball, Pop Warner, etc...

Its time Douglas took a vested interest in our atheltic programs-if you have to pay to play maybe our programs won't be taken for granted as easily. "

Come on wrote on Jul 12, 2009 6:29 PM:

" I understand that is hard for some families, but they said they would work with them. Also Douglas is one of the only districts in Southern Az that still pays for the kids to eat, on away games. Mr. Pettit tried to get that removed but the board said no we should continue to feed the kids. Also every district in southern Az has the child pay to play in sports. Would you rather it is how Sierra Vista has it... They removed all Middle School sports! Over the summer the kids had to raise money to keep them. So if your child can't afford to play then send him to do yard work or other chores. If they explain why they need the money I am sure they can raise the money. Well and with Ray Borane Middle School going to strict uniforms that will make it cheaper throughout the year for school clothes for those families. I have never seen a district that is as considerate about our kids. "

" Even though this money will be coming from my parents and not my own pocket, I think its good the students start paying for sports. We were one of the few schools who didnt have to pay to play. Mainly, we need the money for new equiptment. I'd take this problem back to the parents of Douglas students. I'm sure the equiptment could last a little bit longer if it weren't for certain students running wild and ruining them. Thats where it comes back to the parents; even before I was a student at DHS the parents of Douglas never cared about what their children did, they basically just handed them over to the teachers and coaches as if it wasnt their problem anymore. I can't tell you how many items in each sport, that I do, that I've seen ruined because the students think they are at their own home and can do what they want(this includes those who use the gym and the weightroom). So now the students and parents have to pay the price for their own actions. Hopefully the community will learn something from this and make this the first step in making Douglas a little better. "

Terrific idea wrote on Jul 10, 2009 11:33 PM:

" Good points! I agree that tuition should be paid by all the people that say that they live with people, but really don't. I hope that is strictly enforced and looked into. Many kids lose out because of kids that don't even live in this country! As far as fees for sports, I agree that there should be fees. People find money for their alcohol, drugs, and tobacco, so find it for you kids. Also, it would be great if parents would supply their kids with materials for school such as pencils and paper, because that is a parent's responsibility not the schools. Raise your kids and teach them to be responsible, that isn't the schools' job. School funding comes from different sources, and I think that the school vehicles and trips are paid from a different fund. Great idea on the fees. If people pay fees maybe the parents and the students will attend practices and events on a regular basis instead taking it for granted or not taking it seriously. "

" I agree with angry grandmother. How may families will be able to pay these fees. We have encouraged our children to stay in sports, keep up their grades, et.... but now can we afford it??? not on what we make. Maybe if I made what some of these admistrators made I could but I don't. "

" This is RIDICULOUS! DUSD has to stop spending on things they don't need specially on those trips that the so called teacher training that they don't get anything out of cause we can see it in our children's learning. If DUSD stop spending on those things, we wouldn't have to pay for anything. This is starting to look like a private school not a public school. We the parents that work and still have to buy everything this kids need for their school is hard. Please board once again make good decisions for our kids and do your job right!!! It is once again RIDICULOUS to pay for students on their extracurricular activities when we don't have the monies and they want to participate!! Cmon wake up BOARD!! "

Angry grandmother wrote on Jul 9, 2009 11:53 AM:

" I do not understand how this can happen! I see the big shots of the district in new vans and cars. They should stop buying for themselves, and with all that money from the new cars, spend on the kids to play sports. You are taking away everything from the kids. That is why the kids are turning out to be trouble makers. Also who can pay $200 in this economy now??? Plus all the supplies and clothes that we have to buy for our students to start school. Think about it, we might as well pay tuition for our kids to go to school!!!! "
