Beware of door-to-door magazine scam now occurring in Douglas

Published/Last Modified on Friday, June 19, 2009 10:06 PM MDT

The Douglas Police Department would like to make the community aware of a scam going on in Douglas and other local communities.  Douglas Police were made aware of this scam by a resident who fell victim to the fraud.  The victim reported two young white males who were going door-to-door selling magazine subscriptions.  The two young males invite themselves into your home and are very pushy.  They claim that it is a school related fundraiser based on points and that they are competing with fellow classmates for points.  They plead for you to help them make more points until you get fed up with them and give in.  The company they claim to represent, FloRd Agency, has an address out of Del Ray Beach, Florida, but does not have a telephone number.  The company is fraudulent and has been given an “F” rating by the Better Business Bureau.  The City of Douglas has not issued any required licenses for the door-to-door sales, so they are also operating in violation of City Code.

You can find information on the fraudulent company simply by searching the internet.  You will find several complaints filed in Florida, but complaints have been filed with local police and better business bureaus all across the country.

DO NOT purchase any magazine subscriptions from door-to-door salespersons.  Furthermore, you should never allow any door-to-door salesperson(s) to enter your home, especially under these circumstances.  If anyone comes to your home selling magazines, please contact the Douglas Police Department immediately at 417-7550.  If you are already a victim of this scam, you should also call the Douglas Police Department to report the incident.  You should also report the scam to your local Better Business Bureau in Tucson at (520) 888-5353.

" I feel for this scam too. How do you get out of it except from stopping the checks? "

" I had a young man come to my door, told me that if i ordered 2 magazines from him, then he would be able to quit for the evening. I was trusting and did so. I spent 57.50 on 2 magazines and that was only for 1/2 the payment, I was supposed to mail in the rest within 2 weeks. He had me write 2 different checks. I got online after he left and found out that it was a scam. I called my bank first thing this morning, I stopped payment on the checks, but it costed me 50 to do that, as it is 25 a a check. That is only 7.50 less than what I gave him to begin with. "

I work very hard for the little bit i have. and to give it to someone who is lazy is just wrong.. "
