Long time Douglas resident, Frank Kenyon (age 90) suffered  a heart attack and passed away on Wednesday, July 1.

Frank’s wife, Evelyn, preceded him in death in 1992.  Frank had been a resident of Douglas for 85 years.

He worked at the Phelps Dodge smelter for 44 years before retiring as the Master Mechanic supervising all the craft shops.  Serving as a third class petty officer in the United States Navy during World War II, he performed the job of aviation tinsmith.  Frank was a lifetime member of Elks Lodge #955, Free Masons Chapter  #9RM, and the Douglas American Legion.  He joined the First Baptist church as a youth and was an active member for 76 years.

As a 1936 Douglas High School graduate, he earned his “D” in track (high jump), went on to state track meet, and was voted by his teammates as track captain. His sports endeavors continued after graduation as a softball pitcher on the smelter team and as  a team bowler at the Elks Club. The workers he supervised, the members of his sports teams, and the Baptist Church members will always remember his sense of fairness, his humor, and his wide grin.  He always was willing to help anyone who needed help.

In 1999 he was nominated as an “Ageless Hero” in the Vigor and Vitality category by the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.  He was selected as a individual who served as proof that maturity can be a time of vitality and creativity, overcoming challenges, helping the community, pursuing knowledge, and guiding the lives of young people. Frank will always be remembered as the man in the red “World’s Greatest Dad” baseball hat who walked all over town, to the bank, to the Gadsden restaurant, to church, and to the Hungry Bear cafe.  He logged over 1,000 miles yearly during the last 15 years.

He is survived by his three children, Karen, Tom, and Michael; his daughter-in-law, Juleen; his grand children, Lance (wife-Regina)and Terri(husband-Krish); and three great grandchildren, Paige, Taylor , and Dylan. Others include his sister-in-law, Georgia (husband-Ed) Page; two nephews Rob (Debbie), Mike (Tamara);, and one niece Toni (Troy) Birdsong.  Also, in Oklahoma, Barbara Kenyon(deceased husband and Frank's brother,Otis), nephews: Tom and Mark, and neice, Areta

A “Celebration of Life” service will be held at the First Baptist Church in Douglas in October.  A memorial fund has been set up in his honor.  In lieu of flowers, please send remembrances to First Baptist Church,10th and E Street, Douglas, Arizona 85607.

" I will miss my Grandfather, but I know he is reunited with my Grandmother in Heaven. We will see him again someday. Util then, I will remember the great times I was able to share with him. There was one omission in the family, my great uncle and aunt(Evelyn and Georgia's brother-Joe Ben Tyra, and his wife Terrell). "

" Mr. and Mrs. Kenyon were like parents to me during my Junior and Senior years at DHS. I dated their son Mike and attended church with the Kenyons for several years in the late '60s. They had been married probably 30 years by then and they treated each other like newly weds. They were a wonderful example of married love. Mr. Kenyon was a man of great wisdom and kindness. His influence is treasured, and will be remebered by all of us who knew him.
My thoughts are with you Karen, Tom, and Mike. "

" I went to school with Tom Kenyon his son. I lost track of him and his buddy Paul Nichols after I left Douglas. I also never met Mr. Kenyon but I knew where they live around the corner of A-avenue on 17. My aunt live same street across A- ave on 17 street. My condolences to all the Kenyon Family. "

" I attended First Baptist with my parents, Jim and Frances Haxton for many years. Frank Kenyon and his wife Evelyn were wonderful examples of living their faith through actions and not just words. I still remember Mrs. Kenyon working tirelessly in the kitchen during church events or helping out at countless Vacation Bible Schools! And she never had a hair out of place! Mr. Kenyon was a fixture at First Baptist and it was wonderful to see him again when I visited and give him a big hug. He was always ready to volunteer wherever he was needed and was, at his essence, a gentleman who will be remembered as such. I hope to receive notice of his "Celebration of Life" when it is scheduled in October. "

" I went to school with Karen Kenyon, Mr. Kenyon's daughter. We were in the same graduating class of 1959. Although I never met Mr. Kenyon personally, I remember him as a tall man who it seems, liked working in his yard, as I lived on 19th street and they lived on 17th street in Douglas. On my way to the movies, downtown, etc., I would always pass by the Kenyon house, and many times I would see him out in the yard or porch doing something. My father and father in law were co workers of Mr. Kenyon at the Phelps Dodge Copper Smelter.
On behalf of my wife and the rest of my family, we would like to extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to the children and grand children of Mr. Kenyon. "
