A two-vehicle auto accident last week sent three people to the hospital one of which remains hospitalized with life threatening injuries.

Three people were injured last week in this two-vehicle accident at the intersection of 14th Street and A Ave. The driver of the Oldsmobile is clinging to life at a Tucson Hospital. The passanger in the car was arrested and a female passanger in the Ford Expedition was treated and released from Southeast Arizona Medical Center.

According to Mark Gonzalez of the Douglas Police Department, at approximately 6 p.m. June 30, Douglas Police officers attempted to stop a green Oldsmobile sedan bearing Arizona temporary license plates in the 600 block of 14th St.

Gonzalez said the officer was attempting to stop the Oldsmobile for a simple traffic violation of being stopped in the roadway.

“The driver of the vehicle refused to stop for police and fled from police at a high rate of speed east on 14th St.,” he said. “The driver failed to stop at the stop sign at 14th St. and A Avenue resulting in a major collision with an unsuspecting family traveling southbound on A Avenue in a Ford Expedition.”

The collision could be heard blocks away and rendered both vehicles immobile. Traffic in and around the area was diverted until close to midnight as DPD officers continued their investigation.

“The driver of the green Oldsmobile sustained major injuries from the collision, including head and facial injuries, but nonetheless fled on foot,” Gonzalez said. “An off-duty police officer attempted to apprehend the driver, but he managed to escape.”

Police pursued the driver on foot and later apprehended him, hiding in a tool shed in the backyard of a home at 1100 14th St.

The driver was transported by DFD Paramedics to SAMC before being flown to University Medical Center in Tucson. Gonzalez said due to the seriousness of the injuries the driver has not yet been identified and his current condition has left him unable to talk to detectives as to why he fled.

An investigation of the car failed to turn up any narcotics leaving detectives more puzzled as to why the car sped off.

The occupants of the Ford Expedition, who are from Mexico, were treated for their injuries and released from SAMC.

The passenger of the green Oldsmobile, identified as Alejandro Ceron Reyes, 23, of Mexico was also transported to SAMC but later released and subsequently arrested by DPD officers and charged with conspiracy to commit human smuggling. Reyes was transported to the Cochise County Jail for detention.

The investigation is continuing.
