BISBEE — The Cochise County Board of Supervisors agreed today not to participate in a request for a proposal to construct a private prison next to the existing 2,700-bed prison near Douglas off Highway 191.

Supervisor Ann English, who represents the area in District 2, said the existing state prison did not help the local economy and may have even hurt it.

Willcox was interested in the proposal but doubted the deadline of close of business Friday could be met, according to Supervisor Richard Searle.

" What else is the county doing to attract employers to the area? A prison is better than nothing, which we have plenty of already. Willcox is even smaller than Douglas, they have no labor pool............ "

" Take a look around town and notice all the work prisoners do. Especially for the City of Douglas. If they weren't around doing it the city would have to hire and pay others to do it. One prison is enough! Decriminalize drugs and your spacing problem is solved. "

" "the existing state prison did not help the local economy and may have even hurt it." What do you mean the state prison did not help the local economy? If the state prison would not have been built in Douglas after the Bisbee mines and smelter were closed - Douglas would have been a ghost town. I beg to differ with you Ms. English. The prison has done A LOT for the local economy. What are you basing your comment on-what statistics are you basing this comment on?

I think you owe the employees/voters of the state prison an explanation..... "
