City forges renewed cooperation

The City of Douglas and the Mexican Consulate, have renewed a cooperative spirit in an effort to promote the expansion and reconfiguration of the Douglas Port of Entry.


Douglas Mayor Dr. Michael Gomez and Mexican Consul Oscar de la Torre agree on renewed cooperation for the Douglas Port of Entry expansion.

“The Douglas port of entry is a critical component for the economic development and the physical security of the region such so that the expansion and configuration port project requires a bi-national cooperative effort amongst U.S. and Mexican authorities”, states Mayor, Dr. Michael Gomez.

“We understand Mexico is one of our largest trading partners, 88 percent of which trade actively moves by land, thus the condition of our land port of entry is critical to ensuring efficient trade. Our ports users and manufacturers in Agua Prieta have developed highly integrated production systems across our borders in which efficient borders are critical to supporting the productions of billion of dollars in goods and services every year as well as thousands of jobs to the people of Agua Prieta, which in turn shop in Douglas”

The Mexican Consulate in Douglas, which is an extension of Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, provides local government a line of communication to the advances of Mexico’s proposed port expansion plans.

    " I've been a dedicated proponent of the POE project and a follower of the project from a distance via the media. Strictly from a personal perspective i see a good deal of bravado, redundant statements relative to local statistics, and photo ops. The Mayor has adequately expressed his support as has the honorable Mexican Consul. I suggest that they now step back and let competent entities prevail in performing their missions. The Douglas International Port Authority is the project management organization in this instance; their membership and executive board are intimately knowledgable and qualified to drive the project at all levels and requirements - let them do their jobs. The political tasks need to be put aside now; do not use this project to make yourselves look like this is yours - it is not - it is ours; the Douglas community. "
